Native question about hole

I own many Spydercos right now in my pockets are a Manix and Endura. Both of these have holes well above the handle. I'm strongly thinking about a Native as a gift, but the hole seems low to the handle if not partly inside.

So I ask of you Native owners, any problems or adjustments needed to open it? Ever have the thumb slip or miss ? I'm thinking no, as Spyderco would fix any problems like that. But still I want to know can you draw and open it fast in a natural movement?

Thanks.

You're correct that, when closed, the Native III's thumb hole is partially covered by the scales. However, the Native's hole is oversized relative to other Spyderco models (I guess it was designed to accommodate a gloved hand).

I own a Native, a Scorpius, and a Meerkat, and I've never had problems getting a 'grip' with my thumb on any of the three. Still, to be safe, it's always best to handle a model before buying, if at all possible.

I have owned a Native also

... it was the easiest knife I have ever had to open using a hole - regardless of the slight recess in the handle.

Fear not - my finger never missed it - no worries at all. In fact, I wish some of the other spydies had a similar 'oversized' opening hole :D

Spot on

Hate to burst the bubble here.

The Native is only a 12mm hole, which is considered small to many, a lot seem to prefer 14mm. I love the 12mm myself.

I've carried a Native for years and they are just as easy to open as most other Spyderco models. You only use the side of the hole to open the blade - access to the 'whole' hole isn't really necessary. ;)

The recessed hole is the only reason I have'nt bought one yet, but after reading these post's I feel more assured.

Hey, this is an interesting thread! Axlis, like you I have avoided the Native because of the partially covered hole, but after reading this I also feel more comfortable with giving it a go.

Just to reinforce the point - no issue in my book .. I'll be extremely suprised if you are not satisfied with the Native blade "opening". :D

I have large hands. No problems to report with the Native or Native III.

I never had a problem. The great thing about real Spydie holes is that they're not chamfered, so they're grippy.

:D :D :D

This thread got me out to the store yesterday after work. And I went home with...... a Native

The hole is not such a big deal....

been carrying the native for close to 2 years never had any problems opening it, even with thick gloves in the winter.

On a tangebt but still hole-related, the Para I have just bought has a brown tinge on the inside surface of the hole. Is this just residue from the drilling process? It seems quite hard to remove.

Yes, that is all part of the process. It looks like rust, but it isn't ;)
