navigator vs dragonfly

My most carried spydie is the delica. I have others and occasionally carry those (except at work where it's the dodo but that's turned into a saga) but the delica just dissapears in my pocket, and when I need it it's a cutting slicing machine!!

I was going to get another delica but thought that a navigator or dragonfly would offer about the same carryability with a slightly less pointy tip. I am having trouble chosing between the two. There is an "almight" navigator on ebay right now which looks ok but I don't like the idea of slotted scales, more crap to get stuck in the knife. The engraved dragonfly really looks nice but for a little more money I can get the navigator with the better steel. I may just save the money and get a grippy frn dragonfly.

The calypso looks nice but since it's discontinued and the new limited edition is higher priced I decided to eliminate it from my choices.

What does the hive mind think of these choices?

I used to have a FRN Dragonfly, and traded it only because it was too small for what I wanted. I still have a Delica, which has been carried a lot. If you're looking for a "shruken" Delica, the Dragonfly is it - nice knife

Gitarmac's right on with this one- I bought my wife a Dragonfly because the Delica was too big! Preeeety small. She loves it though.

If you love the Delica, but want a stronger tip, go for the Salt I, or something like the Native. Or stick it out a little longer, the new Delica's are coming out fairly soon, which have something like double the tip strength.

The Dragonfly is great for a small knife, but if you like the size of your Delica, I wouldn't do either the Nav or Dfly because they are quite a bit smaller.

I kind of wanted a smaller knife, I already have an endura native jester and cricket. I figured the navigator or dragonfly would be dodo/cricket sized blade, which would fill a nice gap. The cricket blade is nice but a little thin and I'm mad at the dodo's right now.

I really like the delica but thought one of the two mentioned might be simular enough. I didn't know they were coming out with new ones, maybe I will wait and get the new improved models. I saw an engraved dragonfly on ebay and thought it looked pretty cool.

The Dragonfly and the Navigator are definitely a good size smaller than a Calypso Jr. or Delica. They really fill a different role than the 3” bladed knives.

I have an old, G-10 Navigator and an SS Dragonfly. The shape of the Navigator’s handle feels more comfortable to me, but I prefer the Dragonfly’s blade geometry. (The Dragonfly’s blade is a bit thinner towards the point and is fully flat ground.) Eventually, I’ll probably get a Navigator II, which also has a flat grind.

The Dragonfly’s ATS-55 blade has worked pretty well in my experience. I’ve heard that it’s not as stain resistant as some other steels, but that hasn’t been a problem for me. VG-10 is one of my favorite steels though, so a Navigator that uses it would be very appealing. (My older version of the Navigator has a GIN-1 blade. You don’t hear much about that steel nowadays, but it’s not bad at all.)

If possible, I would try to handle the knives before you decide on one to see which ergos you prefer. The Dragonfly just feels a little awkward to me for some reason. It also has a smaller blade hole, making it harder to open than the Navigator.

But not a "full flat grind". I have a Nav 2, and the flat grind starts at about half-way down the hole. It is, in actuality, a "really high saber-flat grind".

Best wishes,
