Hello ,

I have been wanting to get a folding knife in D-2 for a while. Can you guys give me some in-put on a good one. I would like it to have a 3 1/2 inch blade up to 5 1/2. This knife would be an EDC

I have some questions about the Dozier Thorn, such as one might see here:

http://www.onestopknifeshop.com/store/ka-bar-bob-dozier-thorn.html

What does "side-lock" mean?

Does the knife have dual thumbstuds?
It looks awfully right-handed.

Does it have a sharpened false-edge, and if it did, would the handle cover the sharpened false-edge when closed?

It looks like a nice knife for a right-handed person at a really great price.

I'll second Mr Mitin's vote for the Benchmade AFCK with Axis lock -Model 806D2. It can be found for around $110 on the web. They occasionally show up at the For Sale forum here on BFC in LNIB condition in the $90-$100 range.

I'll second the MAXX5.5 - which I got on deep special from John at Cumberland Knives.

D2 steel, titanium slab handles, opens like a dream...

EDC? Bit large.

Oh, for me to EDC? Check the flag. You've got to be kidding, right.
It gets used most during barbecues for cutting checking and serving.

No one notices it, until they see it fold and go into the pocket. *Then* they notice it.

Personally, I LOVE Ka-Bar's version of the Dozier Thorn. It only has one thumb stud, for a right hander, This is to allow for the small guards, on each side of the butt of the blade. It uses the thumb stud as a stop for when the knife closes. It's very unique.

I don't know about the side-lock, but it's called a Dozier-Lock. It's basically a liner lock, with the thumbstud being used as the stop. It gives the knife a very sleek look when closed. Nothing out of place.

It has a swedge (unsharpened false edge), which can be sharpened if you so choose (with some difficulty, I imagine). Though why would you want to? When closed, the top of the blade IS totally enclosed within the scales.. but still very close to the edge. I would probably trust it, but I sure wouldn't run my thumb across it while pressing down very hard. :D

The grind of the blade itself is VERY nice.. a saber grind. I think it comes closest to my 'ideal' blade profile., as well as blade steel.

The only thing I don't like about the knife is that the handles are made of aluminium. I don't like the feel. But it works better than I thought it would. The knife is also balanced very superbly.., and feels GREAT in the hand.

If you like the look and the price.. get it. You can't go wrong.
I just wish I had a real Dozier Thorn... but can't justify the cash (right now).

My Gosh, nobody mentioned the A.G.Russell version
of the Camillus EDC in D-2 that they have an
exclusive on. This is a Sweet little knife in just
the right size for everyday carry. (i.e.the EDC
carry name) It's also priced right for an upscale
steel knife. A workingman's knife at a workingman's
price :D :D

You're right! I totally forgot. I have that one too.

Though, it all depends on what kind of knife you're looking for.
If you want a heavier, more rugged blade with a recurve, ambidex thumbstuds, get the Camillus CUDA EDC in D2 (AG Russell only). I also wasn't crazy about the AG Russel logo on the blade. There was a fair bit of text., and big. Also, don't forget this knife was designed by Darrel Ralph.

If you want something more for fine work... (it's much pointier, slimmer, sexier)... the KaBar Thorn is for you.

Personally, I like the KaBar Dozier better. This is maybe due to the fact I got the Thorn 6 months after I got my EDC (a newer knife is more exciting). They're really both fine knives, and I can recommend either wholeheartedly.

Both knives are essentially the same price.. actually, I think I paid more for my EDC than the Thorn.. but AG Russel has the Thorn listed at $15 more.

for completeness sake, this is the review I read before deciding to buy my Camillus CUDA EDC D2 : http://www.zvis.com/knives/folding/cudaedc.shtml

and here is the specs on the KaBar Thorn. http://www.ka-bar.com/cgi-bin/product_detail.cgi?product_id=181&cat=10

Tough to beat that BM 806 for the $$$. I don't like the blade coating at all.., but the lock makes up for it....

Another vote for the AFCK 806. The knife does everything well. I'd also go check out the Camillus Maxx. The knife is large, however, it has a think profile and is very easy to carry. Plus a 5 inch folding blade is just cool.

I was a huge D-2 fan until S30V came around. Both steels have almost the same amount of carbon. But for me, the S30V sharpens easier and holds an edge longer.

"less than $180"...? How about the new Buck 172 (Mayo collaboration)

Check out the adds, I've seen 'em less than 170:eek:

The Benchmade 921 swithcback now comes in D-2 steel for a limited time. it also has a pewter colored handle. Very nice!

ag russell camillus edc. A tad shorter (3-3 1/4"?) than what your looking for, but a good knife!!!

Ka Bar do the Extreme range of folders, not the best folders in the world, but not bad at all.

D2 AFCK, if you can stand the BT2

Camillus do a D2 EDC?
