I need a good pocket knife for everyday use and for fishing
in salt water.I want a knife that will hold an edge a long time because I am not real good at sharpning. I want to be able to cut
rope too. Is there a knife that falls in this category and what kind of money are we talking about....thanks in advance

Take a Victorinox Swiss Army Knife.
The Angler or Fisherman if you want a fishscaler - or one of the lock blade´s.
You´ll find a big choice at my HP

Salt water and fishing = Talonite. I like the Camillus Talon but if you want a pocket knife (folder) you may want to also consider the Camillus EDC with Talonite for the blade. Because of my pasison for fixed blades, you may want to consider the mini-Talon (in Talonite) and use it with a slip sheath in your pocket. Talonite is not cheap and you may get turned off by the price, but salt water, fish blood, cutting rope and no need for mainatinance or even much sharpening are traits of Talonite.

I second the recommendation for Talonite (or Stellite)...these cobalt based materials are immune to rust and they will hold an edge far longer than steel...in fact, since the material is essentially hard crsytals in a soft matrix, it will develop "micro-serrations" as you cut (it won't feel shaving sharp at this point but it will keep on cutting)...a cheaper solution might be the dendritic cobalt knives offered by Boye (such as the ones pictured below)
