Need a new tank

Hello all,

Currently have a ZT 350 and also an Emerson Commander -- very happy with both.

I would like to purchase a new, slightly larger folder. Primary uses will be EDC (like big folders) and (God forbid), self defense.

I have narrowed my choices to either a Zero Tolerance 0560 or an Emerson Super Commander. Please don't suggest a Spyderco Military -- already have 6 of them

What are your comments? Will also post on the Emerson subforum :p

If you like the 350 than look at the 300 or 200. The 200 is quite a step up from the 350 and the 300 looks to be about the same size.

If its a tank your looking for I've got a monster framelock that'd fill the bill that just so happens to be for sale at the moment.

Go for the ZT0560 ... plenty big handful that will get whatever job done. Just got one the other day and Im here to tell you the fit and finish on that knife is perfect. It really is a large knife but doesn't handle like one. They have milled a lot of material from the handles to make it handle fast and to balance correctly in your hand ... IMO think you will be very pleased.

+1 on the 0560

Get a 0561. Brown is best here. I have EDC'd mine for maybe 3 or more months now and really can't think of anything I don't like about it.

Actually, I @#$%&!£ love it.

I wouldn't really call my 0560 a "tank". It's a nice fairly strong knife but it isn't a tank. If you want big, strong and heavy go with a 0300 or 0200.

Actually the 0560 feels less strong than the 0550 to me. Don't get me wrong the 0560 is a great knife, just not a tank.

Totally agree. The 0560 is a big knife, and a tough knife, but it actually seems lighter, and sleeker than the 0550. The 0550 is the real tank. Actually if you want a ZT tank, 0301 and 0550 are the options I would go for.

I would also say that it is the weakest ZT I own. If you want a "tank" look at any of the other ZTs.
The very long and very thin lock bar cut out=not a tank. If you just want big and sweeeet the 0560 is the knife for you.

Weakest defined how? The lock-bar on mine is far from thin, and far from narrow. The cutout has little to do with the strength of the lock-bar. If I remember figures I've read elsewhere, the blade thickness is only 0.001 down from their thickest (which I think is the 030x, or the 0200). The only thing about the 0560 that I would not define as tank is the fact that it is only a couple-tenths of an ounce heavier than the 0350. So if you define tank as heavy, then I agree, you don't want the 0560. If you define tank as capability, then I would maintain that the 0560 is a capable as any of the ZT line that I have seen, other than fixed-blades.

This is why the large thin cut out worries me. The lock bar isn't thin, but the cut out is quite thin. I am not saying this will happen with the 0560 but.......long blade and long thin cut out make it a real possibility.

How the heck did THAT happen? You tryin' to do pull-ups on your folders?!
I will not argue that the cut-out is weaker than one without, but I would still dispute that the 0560 is the weakest Zero Tolerance. Of the ones I've seen, best I recall, the 30x, 550, and 560 all have a cut-out. And I think maybe even the 200 (or the 350) does. One of the liner-locks at least.

By the way, did the bent lock allow the blade to close in that case pictured above? Just curious. It looks like it still held the blade open, it just would no longer hold it completely open, nor allow it to completely close. Definitely a failure of the locking bar, but did the bar still hold the blade?

It's not my photo or knife. It does look like the lock did hold the blade open safely.

Maybe it's just me but my 0560 feels weaker than any of the others. Maybe it's just flex that I am feeling, but I don't think tanks should flex.:) Thus my 0560 does not = tank. I don't think it was ever designed to be one.

The cutout in that frame lock looks backwards. Did someone baton the knife with a sledgehammer? Highly doubt that can happen with the 560.
