My girlfriend is looking to have a pair of matched daggers made. Her preferences are for damascus, does not need to have been forged by the person making the knife, and for a female maker. One in the Northeast for a face to face a plus but not mandatory. Any suggestions? Altough not meant for hard use, survival, or combat, they would see use and should have a good working edge.

I would like to suggest Audra Draper, the first female American Bladesmith Society (ABS) Mastersmith. She could make a great pair of daggers for your girlfriend. I am not aware of other female makers who could do as well. Give her a call.

Daggers are for killing. If she really intends to use them, I hope you and she get along very well

Unsolicited suggestion: A matched pair in carved Black (ebony) and White (holly) wood handles might be quite interesting.

I have had pretty good/great experience working with Bruce Evans on three forged blades. He is not famous (yet...) but he is responsive in creating what I had in mind.

Check this damascus boot dagger out:

Audra for one, Dellana for the other would be my choice for damascus daggers made by female makers. (I might be a little prejudice, since I have been lucky to meet both of them and their husbands :, but that would be one heck of a set.)

Lora Sue Bethke would also be a very good young lady to do the daggers. She recieved her Journeyman Smith stamp last year and lives in the NE. She is a close friend of Jim Lucie and she will probably be making some dagger to get ready for her Master Smith test. Her e-mail is LSPB@compuserve.com . She is also a very nice person to talk to.

Paracelsus, Yep, she wants a white and a black handle on otherwise similar knives. Thanks for the leads.

Lora Sue Bethke is worth looking into. I have checked out her knives now for about 3 years. Her particular style hasn't caught my eye but, her work and prices are good. She has always been a great one to talk with and I'm sure would offer pleasant experience with the contraints you mentioned.

Stay Sharp,
Sid

For the handles, how about one side white; fossil ivory and the other side black; buffalo horn.

Then you could show them white sides, black sides or one of each.
