Greetings fellow forumites, I have an unusual request that I hope can be filled. My best friend who dabbles extensively in wood working has found an example of a beautiful set of japanese hand made wood working chisels with sharkskin handles. They can be seen on the back cover of ShopNotes vol. 11, issue 63. If anybody can give me any info on these particular chisels, or know of anyone who can make a similar set, please let me know either through BFC or email me. I think he would go for a set as long as it doesn't break his bank. (his bank is larger than mine!)
Eagerly awaiting a reply,
Mongo

I doubt I can be of much help at all, but try sending japan woodworker an e-mail or a call www.japanwoodworker.com
I think I may know of someone who had some japanese saya nomi made too (scabbard chisels), so I'll see about asking him how he went about doing that.

Hey there Mongo. I saw the same issue of Shop-notes and for what it's worth, The handles were covered in Stingray that had the beads sanded down a bit. Not that it matters any, but if its that particular look you are after I thought I'd bring it to your attention. And boy were they nice to look at.

Crayola... thanks for the link, pretty cool stuff. I haven't had a chance to go through the whole catalogue, but I forwarded it to my friend.
Scott Dog... thanks for the link to the esteemed Mr. Mayo. Spent alot of time drooling over TNT's and his other models. I don't think he does what I was looking for.
3/16th's... I just got an email reply that I sent to shopnotes. The set is owned by one of their employees, and wherever he got them has since gone out of business. Too bad, those sure are a sweet looking set of wood chisels. I should have recognized the handle material as stingray and not shark, as it was incorrectly labeled in the pics info.
thanks all,
Mongo
