Hi Guys....I was wondering if I could use the Spyderco Sharpmaker on a bunch of survival knives and machetes i just bought when it comes time to sharpen them..........most are made of 1095 carbon with a 20 degree edge angle.......Ka-bar Kukri Machete Knife(11-1/2" blade),ONTARIO OKSP8 Spec Plus Machete/Survival(10" blade),ONTARIO OKSP10 Spec Plus Marine Raider Bowie(10" blade),KA-BAR 1245 Black Tanto Fixed Blade Knife(8" blade),Ka-bar #1218 U.S.M.C. Serrated Fighting Knife(7" blade),KA-BART 1247 Black Warthog Fixed Blade Knife(5-3/8" blade),and OFFICIAL GLOCK MILITARY KNIFE w/ROOT SAW BLADE 81(6-3/8" blade)............If not could you recomend something else I could use..........TY in advance.

The Sharpmaker will work fine for sharpening them, however you are going to need something else to reset the edges as while it may say 20 degrees from the manufacturer, they can often be much more obtuse or uneven like 15/25. A cheap x-coarse hardware stone will work well to cut the bevel down freehand, a x-coarse waterstone works much better still. Read Joe's FAQ for a starting point.

I think the sharpmaker will work well. However, for machetes I would recomend something else such as a file and/or stone.

I have the Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker and it is an indispensable tool in my arsenal. I also have a "SKARB" Sharpener which is kind of like the EDGE PRO but I like it better because you can use your own stones with that system.

But for big knives like Gurkha Kukris and machetes I use my TORMEK wet grinding unit. You can see them at www.sharptoolsusa.com I also love the Tormek for re-profiling really beat up knife edges. Be careful though because even when you have the stone set up for fine cutting it removes stock very rapidly. But a great tool for all kinds of sharpening chores. ;)
