Topic says it all. O-1 steel, blade approx 21" or so. Rockwell in the low 50's, maybe even an Edge quench for extra toughness. I don't need to know that its not the best steel for a sword, or all of that other stuff, I just want to know guys who can HT a larger blade like that is a simple carbon steel who are used to doing swords. thanks.

No, Rob M..its not a japanese sword :)

The first name that comes to mind is Paul Bos.

I'm going to move this to "Shop Talk" in hopes that someone there will see it and help you out.

Never thought I would say this but, Paul Bos is not the man. One reason - He does not do oil quenched steels anymore. State of CA put a stop to that for him.

Thanks. I posted it in the sword forum because I was looking for someone with experience with swords, especially medieval European types. Paul Bos doesn't do oil hardening anymore as someone stated, and Howard Clark doesn't offer HT services anymore as far as I know. Lee Oates seems like the best bet, does anyone know if his prices are for blade size or OAL? $75 is a lot considering what the sword is selling for ($150), and its a 21" blade, and around 30" OAL. Has anyone used Lee before for HT that can give some feedback?

I've thusfar used Lee for my heat treating (no offense, Paul, but I've done basically everything in oil-hardening stock!), and I have been nothing but impressed.

Lee turns around blades in less time than I would have thought it would take for them to get shipped! I sent him two just about two weeks' back, and he got them back to me within six days! Oh, but be aware, I think he needs to update his website with a change in shipping price...I keep short-changing him for return shipping...(sorry Lee, I keep forgetting!!!! I'll get a check off to you later this morning!)

Anyway, his work is superlative, and he'll do just about anything you want!

:D  ;)

I think I'll have to email him. I have some 1074 im gonna be making some tantos with. Maybe I will have him HT them instead so I dont ruin them :) The blade is a double edge short sword, simple style, but the blade itself is like 21" long, so it would fit into the $75 category. The customer hasnt approved the design yet, so maybe I can talk him into taking a few inches off :)
