i'm looking for a large lockback and i need some suggestion. here are my requirements:

*needs to be very strong and rugged. i don't mind some extra weight and bulk.
*very strong lock. strong enough that you'll trust your life to it in an emergency.
*clip point or drop point blade of at least 3.5 inches in length.
*ergonomic handle with a deep finger groove for a very secure grip.
*must be in $50 price range. maybe a little higher if it's really good.
my buck 110 fits most of my requirements. the only problem it that it doesn't have a very secure grip.
your suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I don't know if you'll get all those qualities in a knife under $50 -- but then, I certainly wouldn't trust my life to a Buck 110s lock.

I think there's a Buck very similar to a 110 with finger grooves... might be worth looking into.

Personally, though, I'd bite the bullet and buy a Spyderco Chinook, if you can deal with the blade shape. Toughest lockback I've ever seen.

Welcome to the Forums!

You might want to consider the A.G. Russell Strike Force. It's more money than you wanted to spend, but it may be worth your while to take a look. Go to the site at: www.agrussell.com

Good luck in your search.:)

I second the Spyderco Chinook. It may hurt the wallet a bit, but buy quality and only cry once.

Though not a lockback, you should checkout the BM 550. think you can still find them for around $59.00 William

I'll second the SOG Tomcat , here is a pic.
You can pick one up used at a decent price.

Faxanadu, Why don't you buy
a 110 style Oldtimer at Wal-Mart
for $21.00 ($30.00 elsewhere)
and take your file and grinder
to the Delrin handle.
If you are at all artistic,
you will improve the looks and
the grip at the same time.

You may want to check out the Buck 560. This is basically a Buck 110 with a fingergrooved titanium handle. It's an awesome knife. Much lighter than a standard 110, and with a more secure grip. You can also send it back into Buck when you have the spare money, and have the blade upgraded to BG-42 steel, which is outstanding. I think the upgrade cost is something like $30.00.

Get a Buck 560

You could also try out Pete's Custom Knife Shoppe (on Buck's website), and build your own Buck 110. There are many options, which would customize the 110 to your own personal idea of what it should be like. The PCKS 110s are absolutely mind blowing!!! Here's one of mine.

hurts the wallet only till you try it...

Buy the Spyderco Chinook... you just try and get it to fail in anything but factory testing.

Although the Spyderco Chinook is about twice what you wanted to spend, I think it's exactly what you're looking for. I have one and think it is a great, rock-solid folder. This is probably your best bet based on your requirements.

I'm not sure about the price on the states, but maybe you'll consider the Buck Goliath? Big solid blade, big chunky secure handle that's never failed me yet.

Why do you want a lockback?

I'd go with an Axis lock model, the Griptilian series is pretty close to your price limit and they are very tough cutters. Definately the best real user knife I know of for the price.

Seems like no one ever reccommends one of my favorite big, burly lock-backs, the Gerber Gator in ATS-34. All the knife one needs, and under $40.

I forgot about the Gerber Gator.

These are truly great lockbacks in a good steel. The very big and comfortable handle is probably the knife's best feature; you would be hard pressed to find ANY folder with as nice a handle.
