Just checked my email before shutting down and had a message from Pala (actually from Pala's computer helper, Dambar, the guy who does the email and office stuff when Gelbu is away as he is right now -- down in Delhi getting some things done and items purchased that are not available in Kathmandu. Bura is probably requesting some kind of power hammer!) saying "send money" and this single sentence:

"I would like to inform you that Kumar has rejoined our factory."

Good news for Kumar fans.

I've known many Nepalis who head for rich Middle East countries to make the "big bucks" just as Kumar did. Turns out the big bucks are usually around $400 USD per month or so for real dirty dog work. Raking gravel and spreading boiling tar on the streets (typical Nepali work) at 120 degrees ambient makes the big bucks take on a secondary meaning after awhile. I never saw a single Nepali who had done the Mideast tour who was happy and thrilled about the experience and I'm guessing that BirGorkha is looking pretty good to Kumar right now.

I sent a message to Kumar: No fighting with big brother Sher, no horseplay in the shop involving khukuris -- this along with a promise. Do good work and I'll bring you a Christmas present if we make it to Nepal for Christmas. If not, I'll mail it.

Anybody want a Kobra by the originator of the blade? Tom?

Also Pala said he was implementing the signed name on the khukuris asap.

End of news flash.

I was wondering why there wasn't any PGA made by Kumar. I wanted to see his cobra.
By the way, who originated the Chitlani?

The fact that someone returns to one of the poorest countries in the world in a time of great internal strife to work again at BirGorkha says a lot I think. About the country, it's citizens, and HI. I wish all well in this difficult time. I wish all the best. I hope that purchasing essential supplies is not horribily complicated by the current situation. Signed name--well whatever works, I feel the person who made the khuk when I pick it up, whoever he is. That means a lot, I think it's something that the Kamis don't appreciate is missing from nearly all things we use here, regardless of what we pay for them.

There was a follow up email from Dambar this AM. He conveyed my message to Kumar who chuckled and said he would try his best. He will do good work as always but I am almost certain that he will fight with big brother, Sher.

It is the same story as Bura and his older brother, Nara. Nara because he was oldest son inherited the lion's share of the family farm. Bura got a small plot on the side of the mountain. Nara lives on the farm in relative ease with his youngest (and quite beautiful) wife and a couple of latest kids while Bura slaves away in BirGorkha.

The same fate lies in the future for Sher and Kumar. Naturally Kumar does not look kindly on this -- thus, the squabbling and ocassional throwing of fists.

Some of the worst and saddest battles are kids fighting over inheritance. I wisely opted to take myself out of my Dad's will.

Good idea about the will. I think I'll try to die a pauper, to spare the kids grief.

Tell Kumar many of us are glad that he is back at Bir Gorkha.

That's a great idea Howard. Spend all your money on Kukris and bury them in your coffin. What a way to go:D

Uncle
Will you post a guide to reading the names? Since I doubt they will be in english! :)

Excellent news about Kumar. My first HI blade was a "thin" 18" Sirupati made by him, and I think it is still my favorite. I just hope he doesn't go running off again any time soon!

You never know. He was working on wife number two when he left for the "Arab country" as they say in Nepal.

That is great news.... I will be in line for a 20" Kumar Kobra or a "thin" sirupati!

Light, fast and tough (compared to non-kukris!)

cheers

I'm genuinely sorry things didn't work out for Kumar in the Mideast; from a purely selfish perspective, I'm delighted he's back. That guy has class.

I just hope that the wanderlust doesn't come over him again before I've had a chance to get my sticky paws on the price of a new long Kobra. At the moment, though, I'm as broke as the Commandments.
