Hi everybody! I've been lurking for a while and I've been greatly impressed with the postings. I am an owner of the Benchmade/Emerson Specwar CQC7 and I've found it to be a truly fantastic, reliable blade. I've been considering getting a true Emerson for some time now and just had the pleasure of handling a brand new Specwar model. I though that the construction was far superior to what I had and that cinched it for me.

Now all that remains is to decide what I want to get. I want a Commander, plain edge with black handles. What I am not sure of is whether I want the Black-T coating or the satin blade. I've noticed a number of posts where people have buffed the Black-T off to make it satin. Is one preferred over the other? I am not concerned with looks. This is a utility/daily carry blade. Personally, I like signs of wear. I'd appreciate as much input as possible. I'm about to drop over a humdred dollars here, so I want to make a smart buy. So far I must say that I am convinced that just by purchasing one of Mr. Emerson's knives, I've made a good call. Thanks guys!

Just one more thing... Is there a real advantage to having the wave feature? Is it that desirable/useful/practical? Thanks again.

Welcome to Ernies World!
I also had a Benchmade/Emerson CQC-7 that I just put into retirement after years of use and abuse. I was gonna get another CQC-7 but instead opted for the SOCFK that I just got today. BELIEVE ME when I say that the Benchmade pales compared to one from Ernie. It just feels right. I have yet to cut anything with it and only hours after first playing with the SOCFK I now have a Commander on order. As far as blade coatings, The black-t does wear off but you say that it doesn't matter so go for it if you want. Most do prefer the satin blade for those reasons. I use my knifes in the military role so I prefer them "Black on Black with Black Trim". As far as the QC issues that have been going around. Well if my SOCFK is any indication it is outstanding.

Welcome!

A plain edged Commander is an excellent choice, if I do say so myself.

Needless to say, if you liked the BM/Emerson, your going to LOVE EKIs products! They made quit a few improvements over the BM product.

As to the finish, I have found that EKIs "Satin" (Hard Chromed) finish is extremely durable for a working knife. Black-T/Green-T is no slouch, but will show scratches easier then the "Satin".

Is the wave "worth it/all it's cracked up to be"? Oh Hell ya! You "wave" a couple of times and you'll be "hooked".

Welcome!
I would go with a plain edge blackt commander, then when it starts looking crusty you can take the black t off. One unsolicited opinion-I have always liked plain edged knives, however, I prefer a combo edged on my commander-the serrations stay out of the way due to the recurve of the blade and give you some options. I traded my plain edge for a combo edge.
just something to think about, you can't go wrong with either.
cheers,
DWE

Thanks for the warm welcome and great advice, guys. It's nice to be here. I really appreciate any and all input I can get from you concerning the particulars I should consider when ordering my Commander. I can't wait to order it!

If I may be so bold, you may want to order one from Botach . . . soon. They have them on sale for the lowest price I personally have EVER seen. $125

Just a suggestion

I agree with the post above that speaks to the Commander blade shape and the fact the serrations are out of the way.

I like the black on black on black look as well, a holdover from my days of black ops, no doubt.

The satin finish will take a licking and tick with less scars than the black; but buy what you like.

The Wave, ah yes ... the Wave. IMO, and some may differ, to buy an Emerson without the Wave is not unlike buying a single shot MP5.

I had read that there was a market for fake Emersons, and seeing such a great price I was afraid that they might not be the genuine article... Anyone here bought one from there? If so, what year model are they? I think I'll get a Black T blade, come to think of it. But, plain or serrated... decisions, decisions. HELP! *L*

If only ALL my problems were like this.

Several people here have ordered and received knives from Botach. They are a well known company. While on occasion their Customer Service may be spotty according to some (my experiences have been positive), they would not go near ripping customers off.

As for:

When ever money comes into an equation, greed will take over. For the most part, what folks are talking about are misrepresented custom Emersons. However, there have been blatant attempts to market knives as genuine EKI products in the past. The Boker H&K knife comes to mind.

Buy the knife from Botach, you'll be safe.

If you ever have a question about a production or custom knives authenticity, write down the description, including what is written on the sides of the blade, logo and all. Pop in here and you'll get the straight skinny.
