I recieved my new hawk from Chris Canavan at Primitive Edge today. First, a few specs:
Weight: 1lb!
Length: 17.75 inches
OAL of head: 9 inches
Cutting edge: 2 1/8th inches
Spike length: 3.25 inches
Blade tip to haft length: 4 inches
Haft is stained hickory with leather wrap. Also has decorative knottted length that extends 8.75 inches.
I ordered this hawk about a week and a half ago. I must admit I was getting a bit concerned as the mail ran quite slowly. My wife called me at work to let me know it had arrived, but the box was some the worse for wear, which only made me a bit more apprehensive! All was weel though a it was packaged quite well inside the box.
As this is being written "right out of the box" I'll give my initial impressions. This hawk is shorter than my others, which gives it a different "feel" to be sure. This is not a bad thing in IMO, as the hawk is very quick in hand. Desite the head weight of only 1 lb, it still has a nice blade prescence. The hawk has a very rustic look and certainly appears to be something that could have been used in the mid or late 17th century. There are some less than perfect lines in the Hawk as well as a less than perfectly fitted haft (still it seem quite secure). I feel it gives the piece character.
The blade was not exactly sharp on arrival and I have touched it up since the photos were taken. There was alos a slight roll near the bottom end which I have honed out. It's blade side is forged to angle upwards slightly as compared to the Spike end, which I admit I actually like the look of. The spike has a pronounced downward sweep, the tip being beveled to a blunt point. I think it will be quite functional.
Ii am really ipressed with the leather wrap. Chris told me that he felt this hawk had a really good grip and IMO he was right. the was the leather is wrapped craeted a five-sided shape, with the plam side being rounded. It feels great and lends itself to rapib practice swings, along with quich changes in direction.
Overall, I give it a solid 8.5 of ten rating. I am quite pleased but reserve further judgement until I've had a chance to test out the hawk in the field. It seems like an ideal light carrying pice for a day hike. BTW, the head has a stamp that says "R" or "A" Silver. any info that someone may have on that would be much appreciated.
And now (after my dull diatribe) the pics! Foragive the quality..or lack thereof!

Thanks for your time!
