My neighbor gave me this old Western Boyscouts Knife, he knows I am a certified knife wack job. I think maybe it's because I gave him a Bark River skinning knife I picked up in a trade, I don't know. Well, I thought that it was a nice gesture, and asked him if he minded me giving it a good once over. He said he didn't mind, so I took advantage of the chance to work on my handle making skills. The old handle was plastic and leather washers, as you can see in the pics, it was way past saving. As a matter of fact, after I scored the ends on either side of the steel, the handle material simply pealed of under the preasure of my thumb nail. It was rotton on the steel side and the leather washers had shrunken so much, there was a heavy 1/16" of steel visable all around it. I had some stabilized walnut laying around for just such an event. I cleaned the steel all over with a steel buffing wheel, and cut out my blanks. I sanded the blanks by eye, so that they were slightly over sized. and then applied them with 2000lb apoxy. today I sanded of the extra material carefully, and did the final faze by hand. While I was at my vertical sander I reshaped the aluminum butt, it was well pitted with dings. I didn't get them all out, but it looks alot better. well thats my tinkering story for the week, enjoy.
