I've been hinting at this one for a while now...guess it's time to let the cat out of the bag. :D

Have a look:

Specs:

Blade = 0.090" thick S30V, flat grind, 2.5" blade

Handle = natural canvas micarta, 3 corby pins, 4.5" long

Overall = 7"

This is not your everyday paring knife, of course.

This is a "Pikal" version (reverse blade - blade on top, rather than on bottom)....which makes it a dedicated paring knife in the fruit-peeling tradition.

I have worked on this design a long time...and finally decided on this one.

The two above are SOLD, but I have 4 more that'll be glued up in a couple weeks. If interested, let me know!

Pricing as shown above is $90.....

Dan

p.s. reverse-blade knives (like the kerambit) are also great knives for self-defense! But don't tell the kitchen knife block!! And yes...I DO plan on offering these with kydex sheaths. It is so light - you won't be able to tell it's there!

Can the handles be had in a blaze orange.....I always prefer my paring knives to stick out like a sore thumb.

jgkelly - any particular handle preference?

BRAMEL - yes! I have orange G10 in stock. It is a little thinner (1/8" instead of 1/4") - if that's a problem, I could add a black liner to thicken up a little.

Those look really nice Dan!

And it looks like your handle configuration would allow you to turn it over non-pikal and use it that way if needed.

Oh oh - knife goes both ways! Does that mean the price just doulbled too!

Love it:thumbup:

Would be great for dicing garlic cloves:D

Although I can see these with kydex neck sheaths too.

The bark river Mikro Canadian is about that size.

You sir are on an innovative roll! I like it a lot and agree with hollowdweller, a kydex neck sheath would make that one handy knife too. I'd take it backpacking. Looks like it would make a helluva little wood carver too.

Thanks, guys.

I do plan on doing a thin/light kydex sheath to go with it. It won't need to be very big, the curve in the handle at the front will be a great place for it to "lock".

I think they'd look pretty cool and be pretty useful ground on the other side too.

I don't mean double edged, with the other side ground the thumb bump would be sort of a guard.

Dan, I think I would like black canvas micarta. Boring, I know, but when I think of kitchen knives, I think of black handles.

How thick would the liner be??

Would like the same overall thickness.

Dan.. you are a mind reader. I have been looking for that perfect, custom knife, to peel fruit with, that I could afford. Yes, I am serious.

I was wondering, what steel would be best, as many custom knives in my price range are usually carbon steel, which can impart a funky taste to food.

I guess S30V would have no such problem, particularly, if you wash it soon after handling food with it?

I am definately going to order one in the future.

Very innovative. Love the backward blade and the jimping.

I wonder, does 2.5" give you enough blade length, to slice an apple in half? I wonder if just a little more length in the blade is needed, to do more then peeling fruit?

Daniel,
Can you also undo the reverse blade design and use a spearpoint/clippoint design? Maybe a matched set?

I'm liking the blaze orange G10 idea. I might have to get one of these.

Lovely bit of kit. Looks like a real tidy user. Really quite like the idea for a parcel opener, in reverse grip of course ;)

The more I look at it, the more I like it.

Yep, make one in orange G10 with a kydex sheath and I'll buy it ASAP.
