Just got a new Native 3 thanks to ebay, and love it. I debated for a long time what my next spydie would be. I have a Native with CPM440V and liked it very much, but my wife stole it from me, and I found that particular knife's action a bit rough for my tastes. The new endura/delica 4 was an attractive option but the Native has always been my favorite knife in the hand, and I wanted that tank-like toughness again. It seems like the Native is just the right size; the delica feels too small, even though the blade is similar in length, and the endura is a bit big. The big debate was whether or not to go with the Golden made S30V model or the VG10 Native 3. I figured I'd try someting new, and have to say that the ergos on the Native 3 are even better than the original. I'm also a big fan of the wire clip ever since my Salsa (given to a friend). There are traction surfaces in all the right places and the walk and talk is flawless; no blade play either.... I haven't had the time to see how the steel performs (this is my first VG10 Spydie), but I've got a vehicle extrication/rope rescue course this weekend, so there may be a workout in store for the new blade...

The native (in all its forms, except the BRKs) is the real sleeping giant of the Spyderco line and one of Sal's most ingenius designs. Thanks, Sal!

i picked up a native 3 a year or so ago and it fits in my hand better than any other knife i own. i don't EDC it because of its size and the way it rides in my pocket, but it is definitely a great fit and very stout.

I don't own a knife that feels better in my hand than the Native III, but i find that most of my other knives seems to out cut it, so I don't carry it often.

I often carried my trusty Native III to the field (as backup knife), it's a jolly joker to me. (Even my female collegaues like it... ;) )

I've got a III SE and it just doesn't work out as my EDC. I'm looking for a PE now. Other than the mistake I made in getting the SE, it's a great little knife.

After a week with the Native 3 as EDC, I'm even more sold on it. It's everything I'd hoped it would be, and definitely more hand friendly than my previous Native (which was pretty darn comfortable as it was). The VG10 has impressed me as well.

Hi Numberthree,

Thanx for the kind words, appreciate.

Actually, the Native3 is up for a design "up-grade". the"pattern" is where I want it, but compalints of "being too thick" in the pocket have come from ELUs.

The "plan" is to make in thinner, while still retaining the 3D ergos. Always a challenge.

I would appreicate any opinions on the model.

I'm a 3D fan. In fact I'd like to see a few more blade options with the same handle setup - one of the reasons I have a D'Allara drop point on order. Over time I've appreciated more and more how dangerous knives can be - and how a bad cut on a trip to the middle of nowhere can really ruin everyones day. The secure egro's are a real plus to me.

Here's an interesting bit of feedback for you Sal. I was up north recently and since I get such great hospitality up there (getting taken on fishing/hunting trips that most people would pay thousands for) I decided to take a few knives up and give them away. One aboriginal woman, who is a great fishing guide, got to choose between several knives as her 'gift' early in the trip. I had a spare Military, Salt I, an old endura, a SAK Soldier, Manix (which has finally lost the long popularity battle with my Millie) and the Native 3D. This is a woman who uses knives all day every day, as it's the womans traditional role to do the food prep. As soon as she played with the 3D native she wanted it.

So the native chose the Native over quite a few others. She still uses it as her bait knife and EDC. Got some great photos of her using it too, on a memory card that is still up there smewhere:mad: (The same memory card lso has some great pics of the RAT7 that I promised Jeff Randall)

Anyway, I'll post them here when the card turns up.

Native III wast my first Spyderco, it still my favourite little knife. (I LOVE its blade shape - and the thick handle too. ;) )

Sal, I know it would be expensive, but a Native III with titanium handle would be the best ever!

S30V or VG-10!
