Jim O'young of SPEED-TECH knives stopped by this weekend to show us his new prototypes of this new knife. They are very slick and unqiue knives. Great attention to detail with custom fabricated parts from handles to pivot buttons. These are designed as button locking knives that flip out with the thumbstud.

What do you guys think?

Yes, real live knives do exist!!

Thanks again to Patrick of Triple Aught Design for putting up with me on a Sunday morning and taking the time to post a picture of the SPEEDTECH Synergy (tm) prototype knives.

To give you an idea of where we're at, these knives are from the 1st prototype run.

In the latest proto run (which is being made at this very moment), the handle shape has been changed to allow an even more comfortable grip and we have decided to use the machined in surface texturing (seen on the green handle) on the standard product line. Incidentally, the production green will be a darker "British Racing Green". The red is pretty close and the black, well it's black. The other standard production color will be a pewter/blue/grey.

Looks like we will for sure be offering the subdued mirror finish (as shown). Notice both the tanto and upswept point blade styles.

The stainless steel pocket clip and elliptical lanyard opening will be included in the standard product line.

As soon as samples are available from this proto run, we'll post pictures.

Anyway, we're looking forward to any and all comments and feedback.

Stay sharp!

One thing that strikes me is it looks like a very comfortable handle. Is the pivot adjustable? Does the lock button have to be pressed to open it? What kind of variations if any will there be?
Bob

Bob-

Check out the "SpeedTech Knives Info" thread in the general discussion forum, last post 4/30. That should give you a pretty good idea of what the SYNERGY is all about.

You do NOT have to depress the lock button to open the knife. It opens like any other conventional thumb stud folder.

The pivot is designed in a way that it is not necessary to adjust the blade tension. We hold our manufacturing tolerances VERY tightly and use thrust washers on both sides of the pivot to control the feel. Pick one up and you'll see what I mean.

If you're coming to the BLADE Show, drop by booth #84 and I'll take one apart for you. We shouldn't be too hard to find. We're right next to Booth #85, home of Mike, Spark, WOW and Blade Forums.

Stay sharp!

Those do look awful nice. I love a good handle and that looks sweet if a bit slim for my tastes. Be sure to keep the forums informed especially when prices are firm.

Brian-

If the knife gods smile upon SpeedTech, hopefully in early June.

hi bob,

the push button is the lock. to open you simply use the thumbstud, the push button does not need to be depressed to deploy the blade. these knives ARE SMOOOOTH.

plenty of options as these knives will be built to suit with the options offered by Speed-tech.

I'm still amazed how quickly you guys answer the postings!

One more question, is the clip removable? What kind of screws do you use for it (hex, torx)?

I almost regret I'm on vacation beginning of June.

(Just kidding!)

Ralf-

I just get lucky with my timing and all I've been doing for the last 6 months is living and breathing the SYNERGY.

Yes, the #2-56 clip screws are removeable with a torx driver.

If you are a non-clip kind of guy, it might be VERY possible that you can custom order a handle w/o the clip boss and screws.

Take your laptop on your vacation & look for a phone line. Our interactive website will hopefully be up in the next 2 weeks.

Congratulations to you at speed tech for this very cool knife.
I'll put it on my list right now, but the problem is: wiht so many options you offer it will be realy tough to decide for me. I like a blue handle, but red and green also look great.
How could you do this to me?
all the best!

I posted before that I love the blade and handle geometry of this knife. I've never seen the clip though. In the picture, the "button end" of the clip seems big relative to the width of the part of the handle on which it rests.

Any comments on comfort from those handling the knife?

Hello friends!

RED MAG-
Thank you for the kind words of encouragement. If we have made it difficult, we apologize (he! he!). You could always be like Robert DeNiro in TAXI DRIVER ("How much for all of them?").
Seriously though, SPEEDTECH actually wants to make it easy for you by giving you so many choices in the standard, limited edition and custom built product lines.
We just received production sample color chips and they look great. I will post pictures of the 1st production run which will hopefully be available in the next 3 weeks!!

Regarding the clip: It took me two weeks of banging my head against the wall fighting "design paralysis" trying to come up with a shape for the pocket clip that would 1)position the knife as low in the pocket as possible, 2)integrate into the shape of the knfe and 3)would be unobtrusive to your grip in all positions.
After multiple iterations, we settled on the present design seen in the picture. It turns out that this shape was the right choice as it is hardly noticable, if at all when you hold the knife.

Thanks again everybody for all of your support and encouragement. We look forward to meeting as many of you as possible at the BLADE Show. We will be in booth #84, right next to Blade Forums and WOW.

Stay sharp!

something I'm going have to get. I can't get caught up...I think I'm going to have to get some knife control pills.

Jim -- you're protos are now my wallpaper for the week. Can't wait to read a review on these!

Titan-

Glad you enjoy the picture. Hopefully at the end of next week I'll have some pre-production knives to show everyone.

We're running at full speed (like everyone else in the industry) getting ready for the BLADE Show. Hope to meet you there.

Stay sharp!
