I just came across some "New" Schrade knives on the bay. Inexpensive, and I'm pretty sure made in China. Anyone have any experience with these? Are they worth even the cheap asking price?

I got a new Schrade knife for christmas. Its ok but it doesn't hold a candle to the older ones. My wifes uncle has a Schrade that is older than I am and its top notch. Its too bad... they used to make a really nice knife.

I just purchased a couple of Taylor made Schrade with China SS and they are good well made cheap knives. I got them for abusive times when I am in a hot climate or on a canoe trip. They both have a good back spring and the liner lock has a good tension to them. They are not as good as the same style knives that were made in the USA.
the Taylor made are the 2 single blade trapper and baby trapper in the top right.

Wait and find one of the USA Schrades. They were fine pocket knives made to be used. It is a real shame Schrade is gone. It was my first brand of knife I bought and all of us at the lumber yard I worked at had one. Of course as a young buck I had the big LB-7. I had a few and gave them to my Sons. I would not take a new China Schrade for free.................

I bought one of the new ones last year. I threw it out. It wasn't even good enough to give away.

I read an article in either Blade or Knives illustrated where they did a cutting comparison between the Old Timer fixed blade and the new Chinese copy. They said the new knife was as good as the original old timer, doing as many cuts as the old knife.

It's not a knife I have ever owned but I can tell you I sell a ton of these with no complaints or returns.

I purchase the Schrade Texas Ranger stockman this year and it is a very well made knife. It is sharp and has kept a sharp edge.I opened several and all of the Schrade knives were nice that I look over.

I got an Imperial Schrade from an on-line distributor for $8.99. In my not so humble opinion it is not worth the $8.99. I kept it to remind me that you get what you pay for and not to expect anything more than you pay for.

Fit and finish was very poor.

The China "Chrades" are not of uniform quality. there may be more than 1 manufacturer.
the earliest off shore folders (c. 2005) were very poor quality. since then they have improved somewhat, but are nowhere near as good as Rough Rider, Steel Warrior, Marbles or the Colts.
the new Schrade Fixed Blades are a different story. i have a few and they are solid, sharp, substantial knives.
here is a pic of the new Schrade BT01 i recently posted: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=584441&page=70

The used USA Schrades are not very spendy on ebay - at least the smaller slipjoints - so it may be worthwhile to get the "real deal" instead.

I agree with PN. there are lots of Schrade U.S.A. knives on ebay. they were well made so most used ones still have good blade action and no play. (but always safest to ask seller if not mentioned in description)
check Sears and Craftsman U.S.A. knives too. most were made by Schrade or Camillus and often sell below the same knife with the manufacturer's stamping.
if you watch regularly and be patient, almost any pattern can be won for quite a low price. if you are bidding on one and get outbid, you don't have to go higher, because another in same or better condition will always show up.

This may be a stupid question, but...

Is there a way to tell the new ones from the old ones, other than to trust the seller's listing info?

Honestly, I've never felt much attraction to the Old Timers, but after reading a lot of comments in this forum about the excellent quality of the blades in the USA made Old Timers, I want to pick some up.

Great advice. This is how I ended up with way too many Camillus TL-29's, and several other knives. Put in a bid, check back the next day to see if you got it, and hope the wife is in a good mood if she happens to be the one who brings in the mail the day the package arrives.

But with Camillus, there isn't a new producer using the same trademarks like there is with Schrade (AFAIK), so I never wonder about the integrity of what I'm bidding on.

I have a SCHF9 and for the money I think its one of the best bangs for your buck out there. It was even designed by a forum member.

Here's a product review I wrote for it on the site where I bought it.

"Great knife for the price. Excellent design, good carbon steel and extremely durable. This is the kind of knife you can actually use for it's intended purposes and not be afraid of damaging it or your wallet. My only complaint was that on mine the handle slabs didn't quite line up with the choils on the tang. This left it with some protruding points that were a little uncomfortable and might cause blisters after extended use without gloves. But when the price is taken into consideration, I can forgive a little fit and finish miss."

I just realized that this thread was in the traditional folders and fixed blades forum, so you probably wouldn't care about a survival knife lol. My apologies.

I agree with Roland, there are great deals on Ebay all the time if you wait. IMO unless you know the seller is to take their descriptions with a grain of salt. Stay away from old Case knives unless you know them well or ask on Bernard Levines board for opinions. I buy lots of knives on the bay, mostly interesting wrecks to be honest. Strangly, one of my favourite carry knives id an imperial barlow with the steel scales and plastic handle covers. Ripped the handles off and put a "jigged" leather handles on it, the thing takes an incredible edge and cost under 10 bucks. Old Timers go really cheap at times and are great knives as others have said.

It is personal preference, but as others have mentioned, you can pick up an original Schrade for a decent price if you do a llittle looking.....

There is a reason why the Schrade legacy lasted as long as it did. I like to continue that in my own little way by buying only the originals. YMMV

IMHO the originals are actually worth more than the low price they can be had for.

The new ones sure aren't the same as the old ones, but they're still decent enough knives for the money. I consider them about on par with cheap Imperials. :)
