Hello
I have some very good news! I just found a new maker of sorocabanas!
As a collector of Sorocabana knives one of main main concerns was that the traditonal way of making them was a dying art and the style would become extinct.
A few months ago, a guy called Ariovaldo - who works as a cabinet maker - went to my house to borrow a few knife books telling me he wanted to dtart making knives. I knew him before as he was the son-in law of my late lawyer. After a while he told me he decided to start making Sorocabanas and that he was learning the trade with Sr. Bíde, the last artisna known making these knives. I did not took hem too seriously at that moment but I really should.
Today he brough to me his second knife and you can see by yourselves how serious he is.
This is a very good knife, traditionally made in every detail, that shows clearly from who thes guy learned the trade and at the same time that he is already developing a style of his own.
It sport a better polished blade and has many interesting decorative details that, while absolutelly accepatable according to the traditional style, are still something very new, of his own. Unfortunatelly, I lost the scan of the handle close, otherwise you would be able to look closer to the handle details.
I am really glad that, after an almost certain death sentence, the Sorocabanas are having a rebirth by the hands of such talented guy.
He just left my house full of new ideas after inspecting all my collection of antique Sorocabanas and is very interested in becoming a full-time maker. He intend to start making sheaths soon, as well as has just welded a small piece of damascus steel just to see if he could. I think we have a good promise here and will do my best to help him out. He told me he is going to have another knife made next week and I just cant wait to see what hge is going to show up with.
