I just got back from the crack-house, oh I mean e-Bay, and there were these "new" spike polled tomahawks all over the place. They look kind of familiar, but I can't place where I've seen em before. They are very cheap, and there is even one guy trying to pass one off as a genuine "estate sale find". They are similar in general design to the Rogers Rangers hawks, but with subtle differences, a curve here, a slope there. Are these china cheapy copies of an older design? If anybody can give me some info on what theses are, I'd appreciate it.

I just did a quick search & found over 300 hawks listed. If you give us a couple of examples of the ones you are referencing, it would be much easier to offer an opinion.

Sorry Brian, I'm generally smarter than that, Try item #1078390436. I know I've seen these before, but can't remember where. Probably Atlanta Craplery.

NP, Hoplophile, hope I didn't come off seeming cranky -- not that I'm not. I just didn't mean to sound that way before. ;)

I took a look and, except for the hammer-like handle, it does sorta remind me of a rubber one I had as a kid. Other than that, I can't say I've seen similar ones elsewhere. Just eyeballing it, and looking at the seller's other auctions, my guess is it's a POS. Since there are makers like H&B Forge offering quality hawks beginning at only a few dollars more, I wouldn't give the low end stuff on ebay a second glance.

Those look like the old United Cutlery throwing hachet that Smoky Mountain use to sale but those had painted heads. I think they still carry them but i'm not sure......

Man, I had three or four of these things, when I started in the SCA...mostly gifts, but I actually bought one. Comes with an edge you could drive nails with, and a hardware-store-hammer handle!

They throw for sh!t, and they won't hold an edge for more than fifteen minutes (that includes carrying it from the tent to the throwing site--even AIR seems to dull these things!!). Still, for $10, you won't find much competition, and if you can do a little bit of work on them, they make okay beaters, I guess. Just change that handle, for the Gods' sakes! Oh, and you might want to consider just sawing that spike off of the back...it's REALLY soft (I actually bent one of mine over about 20 degrees on a miss, once)!!

All of that said, it's like my folks would say to me, eyes rolling--"It's your money..."

No Brian you didn't come off cranky, I felt I'd come off a bit dense, well denser than usual.
Now About the general shape of the head of this CCCPOS it strikes me as kinda interesting. Since United, (now a Chinese, no longer Taiwanese company), has never had an original idea, I figured that there had to be some kind of original version of this puppy somewhere. Didn't somebody in the 50's make something like these during the tomahawk/bowie/Dan'l Boone/Davey Crockett/you'll put yer eye out with that thing/ craze?

Speakin of which, how come there ain't a bunch of one eyed 50 somethings out there? Ya'll were allowed to play with cool stuff as kids. Knives, tomahawks, hatchets, BB guns, thermo-nuclear lawn darts. We kids of the 70's and 80's had to be satisfied with gettin Star Wars and GI Joe action figures stuck up our noses. Where's the sense of adventure in that? Never could fit Yoda up there. Hmmmm, if I'd taken my finger out then tried...Sheeesh
