I'm a new knife boy!

The big brown truck dropped off a package from Tacoma, WA. After 5 months, it's finally in hand...

It's Tim Wegner's fixed blade interpretation of the Pro Hunter/Spyderco C48, 4.25" blade in Rob Simonich talonite.

Spyder Wegner owners know that the C48 is about confidence. Confidence from the solid, comfortable handle. Confidence from the affirmative "clack" of the lockup. Confidence from the easy-to-use blade style. Well, this knife feels like a smooth, river rock. The slabs are satiny smooth linen micarta, and where the folder had to be thinned out and flattened, the fixed handle is wonderful. No hard contact points at
all. With this knife in your hand, you KNOW that you're holding a knife. You know that you've got a solid grip. You know exactly where the point is. You know that the edge will go through ANYTHING.

The balance is in the rear third of the finger well, a little in front of where it would be in an Applegate-Fairbairn. It's the heaviest knife I've held with the balance that far back. Most heavier knives want to
be choppers. But the Wegner semi-skinner blade is designed primarily for up close skinning and utility work, and the balance is appropriate to make the weight easier to handle under tight control. There is a lot of weight! Full tang 3/16" stock talonite makes the knife super-beefy!

We'll see where things go as far as the talonite, this being my first blade of the material. I can say, though, that the knife needed a touch up (a little rough spot on the edge), and the Firestone took care of business, needing no more strokes (if not less) than it would have for ATS-34. The talonite edge is wierd. It doesn't seem to like being "shaving" sharp, but you can feel the structure on the edge, and know that the knife will slice through pretty much anything I would likely want to use it for. Which ain't shaving.

The knife came with a very well made kydex sheath and Blade Tech's Tek-Lok system, which is really a nice piece for making the sheath
universal. Tim's real specialty is tactical kydex, and his talent is obvious. So far I've played with the horizontal small-of-back setup and an angled cross draw. Both work out like it's how the system was born to be.

Overall, I'm very pleased. The fixed blade interpretation is everything that I'd hoped it would be. The knife begs to be used. Hard. The carry system makes it likely that it will be used. Hard. Tim was a joy to talk to, and his desire to make the C48 design the best production folder in the world made for some really fun chats about tweaks to the already magnificent design.

That's one gorgeous knife! Bet it was worth the five-months wait, huh? I live in Seattle, so I might have to inquire with Tim about this beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing! And enjoy...!

Hey Brian, do you hunt big game?
If not, that new knife might be reason enough to take it up.
...or you could let me borrow it. see how that talonite does after crawling around the rimrock for a few days and dismantling a truckload of antelope and mulies.

Looks like a great knife!

how much does Tim get for them?

Somewhere between the lightweight and the Ti custom folder...

Hey - Gotta give him wiggle room on the future orders!

I am wanting a Wegner fixed blade very badly. What are the dimensions on the knife? I cant find anything that states the blade length.

Blade is 4.25", OAL is right about 9". Incidentally, I reprofiled the edge, and it now shaves. Has shaved since I did the reprofiling about a year ago without so much as a touch up.

Also, I saw a few at the Blade Show this summer (Tim tries to keep some in stock now), and the stock has been thinned down a bit, along with the edge. The knives being produced now have a slightly more flattened feel on the handle slabs. The stainless Boguszewski model is markedly flatter.

BUT - remember that this is a custom knife, and as long as you're willing to wait, it can and will be made to your preferences.

Most of my knives live in my office, either on display or stored. A very few are so good that they have permanent duties, like the SAK in my glove compartment. This one has taken up permanent residence attached to my heavy pack's strap. Absolutely my first choice to have with me in the woods.

I am definitely a Wegnerholic. Trying to decide whether I want to get the fixed blade or the dual lined custom folder.

Mighty fine-looking knife.

I am so envious of people like Tim Wegner. Not only is he a talented designer/producer of Kydex/concealex sheaths, and his Tech-Lock, but in, apparently his off time, he designs great using knives. I'm still ga-ga over my Spyderco Wegner, and waiting impatiently for the Not-Lynx. Had no idea he also did FBs. I have no such talent, and this guy has it to burn. Somehow seems not quite fair.
