Howdy all - I'm looking to by a Sypderco for my husband's 30th birthday. He always raves about these knives and about the one he lost so long ago. Unfortunately, I have not a clue about knives. I thought I had picked out a few cute models until I was reading the post about a knife for your wife - Cricket, yup, I thought that was the best one for my husband. Now I'm afraid I'm going to pick out a girly knife for him! Does anyone have any recommendations for a good, basic, masculine starter model, one that would make a good gift and a lasting impression? Thank you so very much!!!

A cricket is a very nice knife for a man as well IMO. I think the Kopa is very nice, a new take on a traditional look.

Ditto what K.V. said, but I prefer the slightly smaller Spyderco Delica. Or maybe a Benchmade Mini-Griptilian. Any of these will be well-received.

A second ditto on www.newgraham.com .

best regards

What are your husband's hobbies? It would help to know more about his interest beside his picking a great wife who would go to this trouble for him.:D

Get him the same one he lost.;)

Do you know you which knife it is that he lost? Let us know, because if it's not a discontinued model, it should be very easy to get. If it's one of the discontinued models, it may be a little harder, but not impossible.

What did he lose?

You guys are all so great. I feel like I've found the knife family I never had, ha ha! Unfortunately, I don't know what kind of Spyderco he had in the past. I think he's big on pocket knives so he can whip it out whenever the occasion calls for it. I would guess a pocket size. As for serrated vs. flat blade, I have not a clue, although I think the serrated edges look pretty cool. What about black handles vs. stainless, any opinions there? My husband is from MN and is really outdoorsy, loves to hike, fish, camp, hunt, snowboard, etc. He also loves woodworking and his tools. His favorite thing in the world is chopping wood =o) I'm sorry I can't give you more help but I can't ask him since I want it to be a surprise. I really like all of the knives you guys have suggested so far. It just helps to have a second opinion - thanks so much again!!

If he is an outdoors man I would suggest a knife with a G-10 handle first as it doesn't get cold as much as a steel handle and offers superior grip. Knives like the Military, Paramilitary, Manix or Manix 80 depending on size of hand, pocket and personal preferences.
If he is often around water one of the Salts might be a good idea also as they just do not rust.

If he is not in an environment (work and/or otherwise) where blade length would be an issue, and he is the outdoors type, then a 4 " blade (i.e. Endura, Military, Manix, etc.) would probably be good. Otherwise, a 3" blade (i.e. Delica, Paramilitary, Mini-Manix) may make more sense.

The ordering above is intentional. The Endura and Delica are FRN handles, wonderful knives, but less expensive because of the FRN handles (on the order of $40). The Military, Manix, Paramilitary, and Mini-Manix have G-10 handles, which are much nicer/grippier (especially outside in cold/wet weather), but are more on the order of $100 - $120. Many people start out with the less expensive FRN models, and perhaps move up - or, NOT - depends. I still use all of them. If weight is a factor, FRN is a great handle material since those models are very light weight (but still very tough; practically unbreakable!).

Plain edge vs. Serrated is an old debate, but definately a matter of personal choice - particulary with regard to the types of things he would use the knife for. There are benefits to both styles. Many on this forum (myself included) prefer plain edges, because they seem more versatile and are easier to sharpen. But, there are some applications where serrations are superior, without a doubt.

So, it may make the most sense to ask....so much for the element of surprise, but maybe a "gift certificate" (of even your own making on your
printer) to New Graham would be best ?

Good luck!

The Spyderco Para-Military, trust me he'll love it. It's one of the best all-around knives going, plus it has the "wow, neat" factor going for it with the compression lock.:D

I second this suggestion. The Para Military will hold up to his outdoors lifestyle and the G10 handle will stay comfortable and grippy. The lock on the Para is extremely reliable and the blade is thick and made of a great steel. I have smaller knives that go to work with me (Calypso Jr.) that are great at opening mail and cutting boxes, but my Para is what I pick up when I need to do real cutting work outside or anywhere. The other great thing about the Para is that even though it can handle the heavy duty chores, it has a very handy finger choil that makes it wonderful at detailed cutting jobs too.

OK, definitely plain edge. Now I'm wavering between the Delica and the Para. While he loves to get out in his spare time, he does work in an office environment, so would a 3 inch blade like the Para be okay to carry around in his pocket? Or does the nicer handle make it too heavy to comfortably lug around?

This is crazy, but I am becoming semi-obsessed with these knives. They are all I think about lately. Now I want one for myself!! =o)

Delica is a little more office friendly, but from what I've heard, the Para is probably the most comfortable Spyderco made. I would recommend the Delica, unless he has big hands, in which case go with the Para.

The new Delica 4 is a great little knife. Hard to go wrong with it.

Yes, I've tried to find it online but I can't find it being sold anywhere, only backorders and preorders. And his birthday is two weeks from today! Where can I buy it?

I figure this might be his only Spyderco knife for life, so I was going to go all out and get him the expensive Para, but now everyone is rooting for Delicas!

Make it easy on yourself, go to wallmarts & get him the plain edge Native knife by spyderco
If he don't like it, its easy enuff to return & he gets to pick his own knife out then
The Native is a good all around knife w/ spyderco's best steel in the blade

ps the cricket aint no gurly knife, I use mine as a money clip

I would go for the gusto and get the Para.

I would love any knife my wife went to so much trouble to pick for me.

If you can't find the Delica 4, than spring for the Para. The Para is the nicer of the two knives anyway, I only recommended the Delica 4 for it's friendlier appearance and smaller pricetag.

With that kind of time constraint, go Para.
