Call me Theon
I am new to the no spin method of knife throwign. I bought Mr THorns book on combat knife throwing. But I cant seem to get it. Does anyone have any recomendations or general advice. If it helps I throw 12 in home meade knives and a 16 in bayonet.

My style is built around wrist action as the propulsion mechanism and a more gradual, sliding release than is used with other styles. The mistake beginners tend to make is to put too much wrist flip on the knife, or to release the knife too late, either of which will cause the knife to rotate forwards. Try flipping your wrist very gently and allowing the knife to begin slipping out of the hand earlier if this is the case with your throws. Observe the way the knives are striking the target and see why they aren't flying straight, then take steps to correct it.

You might do a search for "Ralph Thorn" on youtube to see low quality segments of my style of throwing in action.

thanks for buying my book,

RT

Try to coordinate your motions so that joints move in this order: shoulder, elbow, wrist - in other words, start by holding the knife vertically (or rear-ward) with a relaxed wrist. Begin the motion of your shoulder while your wrist is still relaxed. Let the 'wave' of motion flow down your arm, and let the knife start sliding early.

Also, as your hand begins to come down from vertical, rotate your wrist clockwise (if you're right-handed) so that your palm stays horizontal.

Try knives that are a little lighter - it may or may not make it easier to learn.

Thank you for all of help. I'll try the things recomended and hopefully get it soon. Im getting bored just doing hawk work!!!

Ralph, is there a certain style of knife that is better to use when starting to learn no-spin throwing? Is that covered in the book?

I like larger knives and I like them with the weight more in the handle side. There is detailed info in both my book and my dvd. My book has been updated and republished as of last month, with more specific info.

I'll be out of the loop for a while, busy with a knife throwing project actually, but will check back in here next week...

Guyon,

About where is "Over Yonder" in Tennessee? I'm from the eastern end of the state and I've heard of "Over Yonder" but never been there, so far as I can tell...

Ralph, I'm in middle TN. You know... "over yonder" from where you live. :D

Just watched the DVD. Wow. I wanna THROW THROW THROW!

Maybe tomorrow afternoon. Not much to throw yet. I gotta build that up - based on your DVD advice. Very instinctive throwing style. I've tried it before as a goof and had it work sometimes but was always told that that isn't the way to throw a knife.

Who knew? LOL

Thanks Ralph.
