Anyone that knows me knows that the Spyderco Wegner was my favorite production knife. Nothing fit my hand like it did. It was marketed as a folding hunter, but it was much more than that. It was a tactical knife of the highest order. I went into a deep depression when Spyderco discontinued it. :(

I recently learned that Blade-Tech, Tim Wegner's company, had bought the equipment to start producing knives and the large Wegner design was going to be produced again, by Blade-Tech. Oh happy day! :D

Mr. Wegner was kind enough to send me some pics and specs.

Federal Express just dropped off my Blade-Tech Pro-Hunter, serial number 120. All I can say is Wow!!!!!   If you liked Spyderco's version, you'll love this one. Much like Spyderco's version, the pictures do not do the knife justice. Blade-Tech's version, which is called the Pro-hunter, is every bit as comfortable as the original. As you can see above there are several siginificant improvements. It is built much like the Spyderco Military, the big exception is the Pro-hunter has dual nested liners instead of just one like the Military. They have also refined the design by drilling and tapping for ambidextrous tip up/down carry. They have enhanced the profile by adding a choil and extra grip serrations to the choil and blade spine. There is no blade play whatsoever. The knife is smooth opening. The large tear drop opening hole makes opening the Pro-hunter a breeze. The size of the opening hole also allows for easy opening while wearing gloves. I am impressed by this knife. Blade-Tech got it right on the money with this one. I believe we have just witnessed the birth of a great new knife company.

I will post a more detailed review when I have a chance to use it.

The spyderco wegner has been my daily carry and use knife for many months and is one of the best folders made by spyderco,in my opinion.Real glad to see it come out again. Are the handles a liitle bit less smooth than the spydie wegner? .Also seems like they are lighter in weight even though they have dual liners vs the single one on the spydie model.Would like to hear your comments on these shootist and thanks for the pictures and info. Are these available only from Tim Wegner?.

The g-10 is textured much like the Spyderco Military. It is lighter in weight since it doesn't have the full length stainless spacer. If you like the Spyderco version, you'll love this one.

I do believe there will be some other dealers that will have them. I'm not sure which ones though. I assume Bladeart will probably have some.

I agree with you that the Wegner was one of Spyderco's best knives. I really hated to see it discontinued.

Dennis-- that looks like my kind of folder: overbuilt.

One of these in CF would be just awesome. I might have to get one.

I had a hard time choosing myself. I will get one in carbon fiber, but for right now I choose g-10.

Thanks for the reply, shootist. The overall langth on the Wegner is 8.5 inches and the spydie has a length of 8 and 3/8".A little different around the choil area from your pictures and lighter in weight. These are the differences I have noticed from your pictures and specs.I have used my spyderco wegner for a lot of chores, cutting meat and vegetables in the kitchen.Cutting cardboard, cutting thin pieces of wood, whittling, and some light prying.Has been thru the dishwasher a couple of times.Still keeps working fine and after tightening it a bit, opens less easily(less chance of opening up by accident in the pocket),but very smoothly and with a solid thunk.Would really like to see your test review and the differences you noticed between the 2 wegners'.

Dennis,

Whenever you have had a chance to do some cutting, please let us know how the blade handles.

Does the blade geometry differ much from the Spyderco Wegner? If not, I am curious to see if the different blade steels result in different cutting attributes.

Thanks for your post.

For those interested in Rc, BladeTech specs these at 58-60. This batch was certified at 58.5

The official name is Wegner Pro Hunter or Wegner P H for short.

I took some pics comparing it with the Spyderco Wegner. These pics suck, but you can get a better idea. Blade geometry is pretty close to the same, with the exception of the new version being flat ground.

Dennis - I just got one this morning from Tim here at SHOT! Man, this thing is VERY impressive. I love the overall design and the Spyderco C48 is one of my all time favorites, but the redesigned one kicks ass totally. It is VERY smooth and the "V hole" makes opening easy and fast. The knife is put together exceptionally well, fit and finish is tight. The dual nested liners give strength while keeping the thickness of the handle down to a minimum.

I got to examine both species - the G-10 one and the carbon fiber one. The CF looks great but IMHO it is too slick to the touch...therefore I chose the G-10 version. It carries very well since it is light weight

BTW Tim also has a wild looking karambit folder designed by Steve Tarani in the display case right now. It's of lockback design with G-10 scales and a large finger ring.

I knew you would love it. I was not exaggerating when I said this is one awesome knife.

Is Blade-Tech planning on producing the kerambit?

Blade-tech very well may be a force to be reckoned with in the knife industry.

Gee, thanks guys! That's all I need, is another "Gotta have" knife! Looks like I'll have to aquire one somehow.

I have Mr. Wegner's mouse knife, a tiny lockback made by Spyderco. It's a really cool little knife! Great for opening mail and cutting up boxes etc etc.

can someone help me to get in touch with Tim Wegner or Bladetech? I sent an email to the Blade-tech contact email listed on their site last week, but haven't received any reply. I would like to buy the Pro-hunter in S30V. Does anyone know of ANY other dealer with the Pro-hunter now?

Thanks,
Spyken

I think that it looks great but I think that I still prefer the full stainless spacer on the Spyderco. The open design is nice, but I think that the full spacer adds alot of rigidity to the design.

Anybody compare it to the Emerson hardwear line? They look similar but are they? I know the Emerson is a liner lock and the Wegner looks like it isn't. Just curious on how they would perform next to each other. Just curious.
