Greetings, I'm new to the world of serious knife ownership and, of course, new to this forum. I am currently getting a custom made knife made for me by a knifemaker here in Oz and I have some questions about sharpening, (when it becomes necessary), of my new knife. Which particular area of the forum, (if not this one), should I be asking my questions.

Any info appreciated.

You will find a lot around sharpening there.

Try it first with one cheap knife, so failures won´t hurt you so much. JMHO.

Welcome to the forum. BTW, you are new to knife ownership and start with a custom? That´s quite unusual isn´t it?

How did you get that far, what is your "knifenut - story"?

Hi gajinoz,

Welcome to the forums! Wow, you're new and you're getting a custom - straight to the top - good for yer! (me envious....:( )

Anyways, you may want to start as follows:

(1) read Joe Talmadges' very useful sharpening faq

(1b) read John Juranitch's book on sharpening, if you're so inclined

http://www.bladeforums.com/features/faqsharp.shtml

(2) run a search on this website and read up on:

- sharpening stones, sharpening tools, techniques, sharpening grits, stropping, the "sharpmaker", "edgepro", "convex edge by way of wet/dry paper", "water stones"

- joe talmadge's, cliff stamp's n other knowledgable folks' commentaries on edge bevels, thinning your edge, and edge finish (ie. coarse vs polished) vis-a-vis cutting/slicing ability

(3) most importantly, get some cheap knives and practice, practice, practice ;)

ps: I believe you should also read fulloflead's post on being a sharpening kung fu master!

hope you have fun! if you're looking to buy a sharpening rigs and strops, consider

- the spyderco sharpmaker (less than $60)
- edgepro (more than $100)
- leevalley green compound for stropping
- handamerican strops
- DMT diamond hones

cheers,
spyken

The short answer on sharpening knives (and keeping them sharp) is to get yourself a Spyderco Sharpmaker and watch the video that comes with it.

Thanks for the info guys. Looks like I've got a lot of interesting reading and searching to do.

I guess I'm not being entirely accurate when I suggest the custom knife is my first one. I've owned several knives before but they were just relatively cheap tools I've had for particular jobs, like for example the couple of Leatherman tools I have. I've never really considered ownership of them as putting me in a category of having a real interest in knives as such although I've always wanted to have some nice ones. I finally decided that I wanted not only a good knife but one that was made they way I wanted it so I jumped in the deep end and, with the help of the vastly more experienced knifemaker, designed what I wanted. I suspect this might not be my last one ...

G'day and thanks for the welcome. Where do I find the Oz site?
