While the city may have insane laws regarding the carry of knives I don't believe that there is any laws on the books prohibiting the act of knife enthusiasts congregating. So, seeing as how a number of us "Usual Suspects" are here in the city why not meet over a pitcher of beer to discuss Emersons?

Wish I lived out there !

Just wait... they'll make THAT a crime sooner or later!

What are the knife laws in New York? I'm planning on coming to the East Coast Custom Show next month and was wondering if it would be okay to carry my CQC7, if not would my small Sebenza be okay? Do they even allow blades under 3 inches there?

I 2 am an ex Manhattanite. I'd groove meeting up with you guys & drooling over all the cool Emerson stuff! Sadly, I only have a few production Emerson's at the moment with a couple of ES1-M's on order... I KICK myself on a daily basis for not buying an older satin finish, fileworked CQC6 last year for $500.00...

It's actually nice to see that are so many New Yorkers including myself collecting Emersons or knives for that matter in this forum. I personally don't know of any other person who collects knives. I'm not sure of the exact laws concerning knife carry but I've never had a problems or any concerns as to what I carry.(As long as you dont't carry a 10" bowie hanging off your side) I've even accidently carried a mini Dalton auto into a diamond exhibit once and set off the metal detector, the security guard/cop looked at it, said hum...handed it back to me and said Ok,next person on line. I carry a Sebenza on a daily basis. I leave the Emersons at home. I think the only time I carried one of my CQC6's was on my way home from the last NY custom knife show where I picked up the knife. Anyone up for meeting at the show Friday morning?

I'll be at the show around 10-11am Friday morning. Seek me out, I'll be wearing a "Jack The Ripper Pub" baseball cap, have a ponytail & will have that glassy little kid lost in the candystore look on my mug... ^_^

According to the flyer that I got, the show officially opens at 1:00PM on Friday. Runs until 7:00PM. I'm sure dealers & "Special Guest" are probably allowed in a little earlier.
Friday: 1-7
Saturday: 9:30-6:00
Sunday: 9:30-4:00

Hi David,

That's great that the show opens at 1, I thought it was 12. That means I will get in early and be able to root around before you guys do!

Actually, Im sure my LDC partner in crime will have the place picked clean of the "good knives" long before we get there.

For those interested, there is a chance I wil l have an extra CQC6. Delivered one last week. One possibly two I get at the show, and a fourth is "in transit". Yes, some of the "usual suspects" are responsible for these purchases.

Take Care,

Les

Oh,

As far as meeting, I need about an hour to get through the show. Just in case there is anything worth buying! LOL

After that Im free. There is a lounge area, both outside the ball room and down the escelator 1 floor is a bar. Either place would be suitable.

Les

Hey Les,
I think there is more than plenty of room in the lounge area just outside the ballroom. Say...3:00. This way it gives everyone a chance to go through the show first to pick through whatever is left.

For all attending, how does 3:00 outside the lounge by the coolers which dispenses water sound.

Friday at the knife show sounds like a good meeting place. I guess the main question is WHEN can everyone actually be at the show? I can arrive at just about any time but what about you guys? Is 12P too early in the work day for some?
Regarding knife laws: What happens in any jurisdiction usually ends up being a matter of the officer's discretion depending on what you are doing at the time. However, I do think that most any locking, folding knife is technically considered illegal to actually carry on the streets of New York. I know that some actually carry box cutters to avoid this in the case of self defense. Will I carry my Emerson's in a back pack to the show? Yes. Will I carry one on a daily basis? No...God, I miss Florida!

the new york state penal law defines "gravity kinife" as meaning"... any knife which has a blade which is released from the handle or sheath thereof by force of gravity or the application of centrifugal force which, when released, is locked in place by means of a button, spring, lever or other device." penal law 265.00
possessing such a device is considered "criminal possession of a weapon in the forth degree", a class a misdemeanor carring a maximim penalty of one tear in jail, etc. penal law 265.01 subd. 1.
in almost 20 years of shows, i have never seen someone arrested, but , as always, be careful and if possible, circumspect.
good luck to all

I too plan to be at the ECCK on Friday. Since the show opens at 1pm, I plan to be there early, mingeling around lounge till it opens. Also, I think the 3 to 3:30 time might work as a good time for a little break from the show to meet other forumites and drool at any recent acquisitions.

Regarding the carry laws, I recently had an interesting experience. While in NYC unloading field equipment at a collegues apartment, I was stopped by a cop driving by. I had just unloaded two mashettes from the car, and I had my Busse Battle Mistress still on my side. It was a wet day, so I was wiping down the blades with a rag. Both cops flew out of the car, both cops had hands on their revolvers, not drawn though. The first on to approach me says, "what the hell are you doing". I replied, "cleaning my field equip., why is that a crime?" "Carying blades on the street like that is." Thay both said I should take that as a warning, and I should not be cleaning my blades on the street. ahhhhhh....life in the big city.

It sounds like it's a miracle that they can have a knife show in New York.

3PM is good with me. Ill have an extra CQC6 and an CQC8 with me.

Les
