Hi all,

I'm new to the forums but not new to sharp pointy things. I'm primarily a sword collector and study Western Martial Arts. My question is this, I have an Ontario Bagwell Bowie( the Fortess to be exact)which has the bead blasted finish. Although I really love the knife the finish makes the blade look like aluminum or some other strange alloy. Is there any way I can polish the surface down to a satin finish?

Your help would really be appreciated.

Gary:)

If the blade is a flat grind, then you're in luck.
You can probably polish the finish away with different grits of wet/dry sandpaper.
I've polished my F4 from 600 to 2000 and it's looking pretty nice. I just need to get my hands on a can of Brasso then I would make it really mirror shine.
Use some hard flat backing for the sandpaper before you try to polish it.
I'm sure others will have better advice than I do.

Thank you Calyth,

That's what I figured but it's always good to ask.
BTW, it is a flat grind

Calyth's advice is gold. SInce your blade is flat ground, it will be easy (relatively speaking) for you to polish it yourself. Get a hard, flat block of something (I use micarta) and you need to fix your knife to something. I hand sand blades by laying some leather on a board, clampin gthe handle to the board and clamping the board to a table. All this does is fix the blade so it won't go anywhere, and the leather keeps the finish on the other side from being scratched. Start at 320 or 400 grit, and alternate directions with each grit change. So, go 320 sanding lengthwise, then go 400 sanding "up and down" along the blade, then change grit and change angle again. This lets you know when to change grits. If there are still lengthwise 320 grit marks, you aren't done the 400 grit finish yet. Go as high as you want. Take care!

Make sure the surface that you're working on is not wrecking the hard earned finish that you've just polished. I have that happened to me.
BTW mine was hollowgrind, so I had to hand sand the grind myself.

excuse me, do you have any information on the guillotine??? if so please post it on my thread thingy.:barf: :barf:
