I have an interest in makeing knives. I would like some suggestions on what type of steel to use. Should I start with a kit or from scratch? I do have access to grinders, sanders and saws. Can you tell me some about heat treating the metel. Should I invest in a heat treater ? and if so how much will I be spending ?
Any help for this newby will be appreciated. Please forgive my spelling .
Thanks again,
banditele

$50 knife shop, by wayne goddard. how to make knives, by barney/loveless. 10 knife projects,by tim McCreight. tims book is the one i used to teach myself how to grind. welcome and happy grinding:)

Glade to see you here. The first thing I would do is start with some cheaper steel like 1095,5160,or 01 they are all oil quenched steels
that means you can heat treat it yourself.
I would not get a heat treat oven, heat treating S.S like
ATS 34, 440c and BG 42 to name some of them, they all have a way they have to be heat treat,I would live that up to someone who has been
doing it for some time Paul Bos is probably the best for that.
If you have a grinder and other tools just hang out here and there
is alot to be learned by this forum, there are alot of good guys to help you along.

Have you noticed that both of those sites are primarily venues for the fantastic tutorials of our very own Bruce Evans? Let's give credit where credit's due, please! Check out Bruce's website:

http://www.homestead.com/beknivessite2/guard.html

and while you're there take a look at Bruce's excellent and inspirational work. No one better exemplifies the sharing nature of the knifemaking community than Bruce Evans does.

But CKD has other's tutorials as well, and they're worth checking out too.

Here's an old post on how to heat treat on a budget using some firebricks and a $20 ($15 when on sale)propane torch that hooks right up to the tank on an outdoor grill. I have the torch, and it shoots out a flame like an F-16 on afterburner.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=107969&highlight=fire+brick+torch+build

Here's a link to Harborfreight's torch:

Buy the fire bricks at a good brickyard. They cost me 56 cents each there as opposed to $2.50 at a local hardware store. Get a few more than you need, too.

One more thing. Do a "titles only" search
in Shap Talk and Shop talk Archive using just the word "best". You'll get a ton of threads with opinions on the best
methods, tools, materials, etc. Of course, not everyone agrees on what's "the best."

Well, that's my two cents from a still-newbie.
