Gentlemen,
A sincere thankyou for all the kind words. The picture is meant to indicate a little of the history going on around it roughly in the time period. The "horse brass" is of Indian manufacture and made for an elephant! The notes and cards are typical of what was left after a visit or soiree and used by all British and Indian military brigades, regiments, etc.
From what little of the mystery/history I have pieced together it MAY have been a kukri made in India (Calcutta)around 1850 and was commissioned by a fairly high member of the British East India Company to give to a very influential Nepalese merchant or perhaps even a member of the Royal Family to gain access to a shipping route of unspecified "product". It is very interesting to see that the kami used the hanshee as his inspiration since that model wasn't in style since the late 1700s. Marine ivory and silver mounts plus the spectacular locket and chape put this piece in a category of its own. The length? 19.25"
The credit should go to Kurt Andersen who put up with my art direction for 5 hours to get the shot just right.
