Finest production folder I have ever seen...
I have just received a Bob Lum tanto folder from Spyderco. It is, with out a doubt, the finest production folder I have ever seen. It is virtually flawless. Most production knives have visible flaws, grind lines that are uneven or miss-aligned, handle components that are a little mis-aligned or roughly finished, grind lines that are visible on the liners or handle spacers, etc.
But this knife has no visible imperfections! I have other Spyderco knives (Mille, Endura)as well as Benchmade, Cold Steel, Emerson, Buck, et al, but none compare to this! The lock-up is like a vault- vertually no blade play whatsoever. Opening action is as smooth as silk, and the VG-10 blade is the typical Spyderco scary-sharp!
Well worth the $120.00 price. Almost a shame to use it, it is so nice. But I plan to use it hard and I will let you know how it holds up.

Hmmmm, I guess you've never examined a Sebenza closely... :)

I have been impressed with some of the Spydercos I have examined, especially at their relatively low prices, but i havent seen one yet that compares with the Sebenza in quality, fit and finish, though of course you're gonna pay for it. :) I would also have to say that most Microtechs are better than a Spyderco in F&F, but, yes, again, they're more expensive and most are autos. I would also say that after MT and CRK, Spyderco is maybe the best quality production folder, but lately I have seen some pretty well made knives from Benchmade.

Since i just lost my trusty little Kershaw chive that i kept in my car, i'm thinking a CF Delica might be a nice replacement.

Never held or seen a Sebenza. But I sort of put knives like that in a different class than a Spydie. Maybe this one is so nice because it is a Lum collaberation. I have several CRKT custom knives (Lightfoot M1, Crawford/Kasper folder, Bladelock, etc), I was just plesently surprised by the FF of this knife.

Ha, Ha, Yester5, the joke is on you.
If you really like the Spydie Lum, you might try to find a tanto Sebenza, which is also a Lum collaboration. (really)
IMO the grind on the Spydie is a bit assymetrical, but the Sebbie tanto is perfect. perfect. perfect. (and the blades are very similiar)

I would like to see a Sebenza up close and personal :) I am sure they are beautiful. I am new to the "tactical folder" relm...only been collecting for about three years. I was still impressed at the cost/quality factor of the Spidie.

I have to agree with you. My Ti Lum Tanto folder is, to my eye, flawless. I can't see any defects in fit or finish, no assymetric grinds, and no play in the blade or lock. In my opinion, it is great value.

I'm sure you might find other knives with different blade finishes which some might prefer more, but that doesn't make the Spyderco model inferior. I'm also sure that microscopic inspection might find defects or flaws which I can't see at 10X magnification. For me, that's not reason enough to spend twice as much (or more) for a knife from another manufacturer.

Maybe it was the earlier production models, but the top of the tanto was obviously ground unevenly. At first I thought maybe there was just a mistake on mine, but then I saw another one, either at the Spyderco site, or another dealer's site, and it was exactly the same incorrect grind. Now, I'm not complaining, as this doesn't affect functionality, but it is visually obvious.
If someone wants to post my pics, let me know, and I'll email them.

Walking Man, I think that might have been asymmetrical, not assymmetrical. Or was that intentional? In any case, asymmetric or assymetric would be slightly better.

I own several Spydercos and they are top notch knives for the price. It really isn't fair to compare them to the Sebenza though. You get what you pay for in this world and the Sebenza is hands down better than any of the Spydies I have ever seen, bit it should be at over $300 per knife! :D

....If someone (anyone, not picking on you, Yester) is going to claim that a Spydie, even a well made Spydie is "virtually flawless", then why not? I'm just putting in my .02. Yes the Spydie is a DAMN fine knife, but my Tanto Sebbie blade is obviously better. (maybe not in function, though) Take it for what it's worth. Still waiting to see if anyone wants pics.

A man after my own heart! That is the knife that started my love for Spyderco and it's STILL one of my favorite folders of all time. I've even bought a backup that I've kept mint in case I lose mine.

I love to hear other people who love that particular knife because I think it's special.

I even tested it by carrying it around during an Alaskan trip recently and experienced no rust and it served me well.

If I were stranded on a desert Island the SC Lum Tanto would be my folder. It would be the last knife I'd sell if I lost my job!

The Spyderco Ti Lum Tanto is a great knife. However, neither of us can determine that your Sebenza is "obviously better" unless you can compare the two side-by-side.

Sebenza's have a great reputation and CRK has certainly won it's share of manufacturing awards. All that Yester (and I) said was that our own personal Lums were without observable flaws - then the Sebenza owners jump up saying "still not as good as a Sebenza". We never said it was, just that what we had was great! (but I still can't say it's not as good without a side-by-side comparison ;) ).

WHAT I WROTE: "but my Tanto Sebbie blade is obviously better"
I said blade, not knife overall..... I'm not downing it, I'm not tooting the Sebbie, what I said was there is an obvious imperfection in my Spyderco blade. If you don't want to believe me, fine. I guess that you own an updated, newer version of the Spydie.

Walking Man

OK, sorry! By rereading all the above posts I can now see that you were comparing your Spyderco Lum tanto to a Sebenza tanto which you also own - side by side. Sorry yours had a defect. I just looked at mine again and still can't find a thing wrong with it. I guess we can't be sure which condition is more representative of the whole run of the model.
