Ok, for those of you who don't know, my Nimravus is closer to my heart after my recent camping trip...now...I did lose it for a few days after I returned, and just found it this morning. It was REALLY dirty and all scratched up after its rough trip, sooo...

I threw it and its sheath in the dishwasher this morning on my way out. Is that a BAD thing to do? Both the blade and sheath came out clean and fine...one thing. The G-10 scales were a faded grey color and almost looked white. WHoops, little over cooked. I jsut pulled it out and oiled the knife and scales with some 3 in one and they have resumed their color...but did i screw something up? Anybody else jsut throw their knife in the dishwasher?

Last question...I need a good sharpening stone to give the nim a little refresher, can anybody reccomend a good one?

Thanks.

I doubt that the dishwasher gets hot enough to hurt the temper of the blade. While it apparently didn't hurt the scales, my gut tells me that it wouldn't be a great idea to subject them to this kind of cleaning too often. Maybe someone is aboard who knows more about the makeup of these scales. I use a sharpmaker 204 to touch up both my Nim and Cub, and they come right back up to my standard, which is pretty darned sharp! A couple of passes on a loaded razor strop finishes them off just right.

While I was still an active LEO, I knew of more than one guy who broke down their Glocks and tossed the parts, including magazines, in the dishwasher after a range session , and then just brushed out the bores well with solvent and brush and they were done! Of course, Glocks are totally (almost) indestructable. Thousands of cops at "Glock Shoots" have seen the Glock folks toss a pistol from a hovering copter onto a paved lot, and then pick it up, load it, and start firing! It's pretty impressive.

Striders can be washed in the dishwasher. ;)

I can't imagine it's too good for things like nuts, bolts, fasteners, but hell... if it came out ok... then...

It's not hot enough to ruin the temper.

While one can get away with tossing a Nimravus in the dishwasher, I'd be a bit reluctant to do the same with the Kydex sheath that came with mine. Kydex is a thermo-formable plastic and the heat from the drying action may be just enough to cause that Kydex sheath to try to return to it's normal state, which is somewhat flat.
In other words, you may not get out the same shaped sheath you put in.

BTW, I've been able to get Kydex to un-mold with the heat from a hair dryer(Vidal Sassoon 1500watt model).

All the best,

i wouldn't reccomend cleaning your knife in the dishwasher. it could potentially do harm to the scales, and the dishwasher (freak accident, maybe).

also, i doubt you were putting the sheath in there, but heed Mike's words. my Nimravus sheath and my Arclite sheath both lost a little bit of their form when i left them in my car for a bit in 90º+ weather. the Nimravus sheath had already been burnt in a fire (ask six feet deep about that one, LOL), and it lost a little more hold, but it stays in fine with the snap closure. however, my Arclite sheath wasn't so lucky. i can no longer carry it for anything more than a simple walk, as a moderate bob on the chain will cause the knife to fall out. it's fixable tho.

but anyways, yeah, i wouldn't reccomend cleaning your knives in the dishwasher. altho it probly wont do any harm to a blade like the Nimravus. i just personally wouldn't chance it.

Wll men, let me tell you something...
My sheath did go through the washer with my blade (it was full of sand) and it came out just fine. I'm actually quite happy with the results. The sheath is clean, the knife is clean, i shaprened the blade, and all is well except for the fact that my finish is shot to all hell from all of the sand it was inn I say the scratches add character. I did not buy this knife to look at.
