There was a time when I bought a myriad of Buck knives from WallyWorld. Yesterday's visit ended that. I needed oil - thought I'd check on the availability of some of the Bucks folks have reported on here.
That does it. My last visit to the sporting section - knife counter - yesterday - was a shock - they are carrying shotguns and rifles again! The case where the ammo was locked behind glass is now replaced by a larger case with the long guns, leaving little area left for ammo below it. Guns - no ammo - makes sense? Oops - but what about the knives - my real reason to buy there. When I asked the new fellow - an older guy obviously 'out of his element' - about the discontinued Bucks, he said look at the discontinued knives on the hooks down the aisle - all 'Winchester' marked PRC-made. I came right back and said there weren't any - could he possibly have them in the lock case under the counter - with a glass door - you can see the stock without unlocking it. He looked incensed that I would ask him to 'do' something. I tried to defuse the situation by commenting on the new gun display - he corrected me - said they'd been there for two weeks - where had I been? He quickly said he had no knives on closeout - just what was 'pictured'. I asked about a specific number - he said that was out - without looking. I finally took the hint and left.
This guy was cut from the same bolt of rough burlap as the previous old coot that worked that counter - just as bad an attitude. Why hire someone so unsuited for retail sales? Oh for the days of the little girls who were 'filling in' - no knowledge of the product but willing to show you everything in the case - if they could find/get/work the keys! As I walked to the Auto section to buy oil so I could change my Jeep's oil, not a 'happy camper', trying to get back to the reason for my visit, I met a young clerk who was more than helpful - handed me the oil - asked if I wanted to check out there - and proceeded to go to the counter register and ring me up - as he told me I could return my used oil there for free recycling - wow!
I won't buy Bucks at Wally World any more. No big loss - they haven't had anything neat in years. Sorry for the rant. Maybe another store would be better? I know a locally owned huge sporting goods store will get even more of my knife money in the future - time to look over there for Bucks - 'price' isn't everything.
