I've only heard about it being done, can one throw a knife by the handle so it didn't rotate , like a spear or arrow?

Myth or reality?

Hi , It can be done but only out to about 5 or 6 meters ( for me anyway ) the method is described in styers book " cold steel " in a nutshell you hold the knife in the flat of your palm with the handle held by your thumb with the point facing the ground you pull your arm back like you are pitching a horse shoe and then pitch it underarm without breaking the wrist as you release it at a point just below your beltline with a good follow through like golf , this method works well with blade heavy designs like bowies etc , have fun :D regards Fishmonger

Very doable--check out the method promoted by Ralph Thorn. Ralph used to post here, but apparently had issues with toning down his salesmanship.

You can see video of his throwing at this website. He does a throw from--well, quite an astounding distance.

The method he uses involves taping the handles of the blades to add extra weight to them. This helps counter the inherent pitch and yaw of a thrown blade.

yeah thats the only way i can throw knives properly :]
once, i threw my tiny letter opener and it went through my two cardboard boxes and straight into the plaster wall :p Whoops.

I saw this book at a gun show and I thought it was bs, this video shows that it definatley ain't

that method you are describing with your thumb. I've seen it in many ninjitsu books by Stephen K. Hayes and Hatsumi Matsaaki

the method of holding it across your fingers with your thumb is how you hold a straight shuriken in ninjutsu or shuriken-do, and the method you described is just an underhand throw. there a lots of ways to throw it straight, it just needs to be weighted a little differently.
