I'm sure the answer to this question is general knowledge in this forum, but I can't seem to find it and am tired of looking. So...I will go ahead and ask this noob question:

What is the difference between "RAT Cutlery Company" and the "Rat: Ontario Knife Company"?

Welcome to the forum Idaho

The thread Nishna posted should answer your question, but if you have others there are alot of helpful knowledgeable guys around here.

Don't mind Maxpete he was just kidding ; notice the wink. You definately need a sence of humor around here:thumbup::D

No offence intended, Idaho! By way of a less light hearted response, most of the Rats I've bought made by Ontario have been returned or sold due to quality control issues. The quality of the two RC-4 knives I have is in another league :)

So, you'll quickly find two issues: quality control and intellectual property.
The first is easy to see with a side-by-side comparison, and the second should be just as clear cut...

If you couldn't find your way to http://www.ratcutlery.com/about.htm
don't venture into the wild any time soon... ;)

Do you think this guy will ever post here again? I doubt it.

A new poster asks a simple question and this is the kind of response he gets? Its one thing to joke among yourselves but to slam a new poster for asking a question is another and that is exactly what that reply was. (regardless of the wink)

It may not have been intended that way and I could be wrong, but that's how I see it and it and it appears exactly how he took it.

This is one reason I don't post a lot. Not that it matters...

The Ontarios are decent knives made by an American legend. Some of their recent dealings have soiled their reputation some and their quality control has come into question as of late but as far as I can tell their still solid knives with a great design and great materials.

The RC's on the other hand are top notch, custom quality blades with greater design, just as great of materials and a much higher level of fit and finish. Granted, they cost a bit more, but the jump in quality and the no questions asked warrenty make the price well worth it.

Now that I have an RC, I couldn't imagine buying an Ontario.

This is the type of answer I was looking for. Visually, the two look very similar, so there is obviously some type of connection. Then, I see people's signature line stating "I support RAT Cutlery." I was just unsure which came first, RAT or Rat Ontario. Now I know.

Mexpete, no hard feelings. It doesn't sound like you meant to be offensive and, truth be told, I was on the tail end of a graveyard shift and maybe a little edgy. We're square!

Now, how come there are never any RC's on the exchange?

So which one are you thinking about purchasing?

Not that I am selling any f mine, I am just curious.

I haven't decided between the RC3 or RC4. I am looking for the plain edge though and have no real use for the Molle extension on the sheath. The OD/Orange is a nice combination, but they seem harder to find.

They aren't out yet.
Although I have a feeling they may be scarce at their first debut (the OD/Orange) as several of us have been waiting to snatch one up.

The RC-4 is a little thicker but it seems to cut about the same as the RC-3 as far as I can tell.

I prefer the Kydex sheath that comes with the 4 personally, it's a really well made peice. Nice tight snap in and adjustable tension make it the winner in my book. Also, the knife point has less of a tendency to stick into the Kydex as opposed to the molded sheath making one handed, blind resheathing go a little smoother.

Not to mention that with the RC-4, they throw in an additional inch of blade length practically free.;)

the prices on ebay seem good to me and you can see them on other sites like knifeforum or ar15 sometimes. I have a few Swamp Rats and an RC-3- it's a tough, comfortable and sharp knife. I got mine used on a site with the upgraded sheath and am very pleased!
