I picked up this Norlund axe head at a garage sale this weekend and I'd like to learn more about it. It's a little over 6 1/2" long and 4" from head to toe. The only markings are "Genuine Norlund". Can anyone tell me what pattern this is, when it might have been made, or point me to some good websites where I might learn more about the history of the Norlund line? Also, I read somewhere that Norlund's take an oddball sized handle. Will it be difficult to find a replacement? I'm looking forward to getting this beauty back in service. :) Thanks a lot.

Thanks Dusty One. I've been searching for any Norlund info too. Other than axes and heads for sale, I haven't seen much other general info.

Old Jimbo helped me out with a little history and an ID on this guy. As it turns out, Norlund was a sporting goods sales company (which went out of business decades ago) and it's axes were made by Mann Edge Tool Company of Lewistown, PA. This style is called the "Standard Boy's Axe" and was known to be an incredible chopper in it's weight class. I found a beautiful arrow straight-grain hickory shaft in 36" to fit to it. It's longer than the 28" originally found on this axe, but it was all I could find that would fill it's larger hole. I'll keep looking, but I wanted to get this baby up and chopping. Splitting seasoned oak wasn't much of a challange. I'm going to work on the edge a bit more and try some green and seasoned chopping.

Is OldJimbo still writing articles and hangin' out on the forums or did you email him directly? That guy can talk a die hard Busse guy into an axe. :D

I sent him an email with a photo and he responded with a LOT of good info. Now I know where to go with any more questions. :D

A good buddy of mine has a hatchet made by them.It was OOOOOOOOLD looking when he dug it up in some shed on their property. It looks exactially like my Snow and Nealley Hudson bay axe.I have a pic of them side by side I'll post it when I get home.I re-handled it with a cold steel tomahawk handle.Looks a works sweet for him now.

I'd like to see that one. This one was so rusted that I could barely read "Norlund", and the edges of the poll were rolled over from pounding. No chips in the cutting edge though.

I have a hatchet head that matches your photo to a T. Where is this info found that others are saying is so good. I will look on Wickapedia and see what I can come up with. I googled it and it looked as though there were two origins for this company or a coloboration of some sort. Like I said I just looked it up briefly and while looking for infl my good ole bladeforums site came up.

Cheers
