Finally got around to stripping the black off my Norse Hawk, then did a vinegar dip to gray it up a bit and was surprised to see temper lines emerge. Not so easy to see in the picture, but it looks like there are four distinct zones from edge to eye (the last one is very faint). Anyone want to try and interpret?

It is good to see that cold steel is actually doing a differential heat treat on there heads do not know why it is a band and does not go to the cutting edge. The patina looks great

the literature at cold steel says the hawks are diff. heat treated but that is the first pic i've seen showing it. pretty cool.

How long did you leave it in the vinegar, I'm planning on getting a norse myself and wanted to do a vinegar patina

I put it in a shallow tray with enough vinegar to cover the blade but not all the eye. For that, I rocked the tray enough to slosh vinegar over everything and flipped it over from time to time. All in all in was wet for 15-20 minutes or so. If you look at the picture you can see the original color on the points, where I taped the edge to prevent scratching the tray (it was glass).

Thanks, just one more question, What did you use to strip the paint off? Just normal paint stripper? I was wondering if oven cleaner would work.

Plain old paint stripper. I can't think of the name right now but it foams, smells like oranges and melts that stuff right off. If you like I'll post the name of it when I get home, but it wasn't anything special, just something off the shelf at my local H-D.

No need for the specific name. Thanks, I'm hoping to track down a norse hawk this weekend, but if I can't I'll just order one from the net. I'm excited to start modding it.
