Back in late 1998 Rob fashioned his first Talonite knife.

Here is a picture of that knife, the Wambli, along with Trace Rinaldi's first Talonite knife, the Chimera, and the first made of Rob's first folding Talonite knife, the Carnivore:

And for some more nostalgia, an article published in the first edition of BFC's E-Zine about the creation of these knives:

Zack, I must be missing something here.... What has your quote and the comment about a fine line between a hobby and mental illness got to do with my posting pictures of the original Talonite knives by two makers and a link to an old article about how they came to be? Is it that your opinion is that those of us who have experimented with new materials need a sanity check? Seriously, I'm confused as to what your comment truly means.

Thanks Bob for the reminders - still have some early Talonite Pikunis - love em as much now as when got them - still use them on occasion, though Camillus Talon is my everyday utility now. Have not found better utility knife yet though some that probably work as well. I also still have my Talonite Carnivore w/Ringed Gidgee wood scales and some incredible filework! Plus had also picked up a Carbon Fiber handled one too - they are as well-made as any folder I have bar none - will never part with them.

Have no idea what Zach was going on about! Maybe too much eggnog? :D

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas!
Bill

Bob, cool stuff! Brings back some memories for sure.

Zach is a good guy, he was just trying to get the pictures to post! :)

Glad you are still enjoying the Pikunis Bill! :)

I'm still around but as you can imagine things have been "different" since 9-11. Our Wing was lead in the Afgan stuff and the ROEs (rules of engagement) permit me to say we're deploying B-1Bs again, but not when nor where. So I've been rather busy.

These knives are still cherished here. Trace I don't think I ever told you but in the long run the thinner stock of the Chimera has proven to be the best all around. The thick stock Rob and I selected for the original Wambli experiment gives that puppy a "grunt" advantage and the edge on both holds as we've come to expect from Talonite, but the Chimera has won my heart over time. The fact that you worked from drawings of mine that incorporated features of several of your knives might have a subconscious influence, but... nah -:) The little Camillus Talon gift from Will Fennell and Rob (thanks again guys!) has the thinner stock too and is a gem as well... great for front pocket carry. Gee I remember now the dialog that went into naming that knife after Camillus ran into a trademark problem with their first choice. I had something to do with that too as did Tom Walz's son -:)

Man... lots of water under the bridge. What I am so very pleased about is where you two have gone since late 1998. Magazine covers, articles, Ron Hood fun, great new models and materials... You both make me feel old! hehehehehe

All the best to both of you and your families for the new year!

PS Zach.. duh! Rob set me straight as you can see from his post. And Bill... yup those blades you favor are indeed great ones!
