NYC legal experiences?

I just moved to Brooklyn a few months ago, from Virginia. I've checked out the penal codes regarding knife carry laws in NYC, there seems to be a lot of latitude for the discretion of officers and judges. So I've looked online for personal experiences to try to gague how severe the NYC cops really are, but most that I've found are pre-9/11. Now we have metal detectors everywhere and cops with full autos at train stations. The blades that I carry are all under 4" and are mostly concealed, but the horror stories (being locked up for 16 days before getting a judge to pull out a ruler) still make me paranoid.

Anybody out there have recent NYC experiences? Or a better understanding of how the police feel about these things?

I've done a lot of investigating on this issue. The law reads that if it's fully concealed and under 4" (not an auto, dirk, gravity, dagger, etc) than it's legal. I would generally take this to mean FULLY concealed, not clipped to your pocket.

That being said the NYPD really has the final say and they can pretty much do whatever they want. I've seen people carry knives clipped to their pockets walk right past NYPD folks in the subway without a second glance, and have read first hand accounts of people going to jail because the officer thought the knife could be considered a deadly weapon.

You have to decide for yourself what you're willing to risk to defend yourself. All the criminals are armed and they don't bother with the law. I'd rather be in jail and alive that law abiding and dead.

I've carried a knife everyday for 3 years and have never had a problem. Then again, I've never been searched or had to defend myself either.

i have lived in brooklyn all my life and i carry a folder every day. the key is to have the utmost respect for the officer that is serching you and always be honest with them(if you lie it will just make you look suspicious when you are cuaght).
Tell them i have a folding knife in my pocket. and when thay ask why do you have it dont say for self defence. tell them its for utility purposes cutting boxes /opening mail /work anything besides stabbing another human with it(which is being honest becaus 99.9 percent of the time the knives we carry are not used for self defence thay are used for every day mundane things). dont carry anything with a blade over 4 inches but some times a LEO wil just use the 4 finger rule to mesure the blade. the law says to carry the knife conceled but i almost never do i keep it on my belt. i dont know if that is good or not but its what i do just becaus the knife gets in the way when its in my pocket. and i have never had a LEO stop me becaus of the knife. now there have been times when ive been stoped/questioned by an LEO with a knife on my belt and have not had a problem. infact 3 monthes ago i was in a friends car. we where pulled over pulled out of the car and frisked. the detective pulled the buck strider off my belt(after i told him it was there) and placed it on top of the car away from my keys and wallet. fearing the worst i ask him is that going to be a problem?( meaning is it to big to leagly carry) with out even opening he answers no not at all just that he would not want to be cut by it. thay let us go after a few and i still have my buck.
your best bet is to not act like an ass or im my case just look like one! and when you are confronted by an LEO have some respect and comon curtisy and thay will show you the same.
you might want to go to your local precinct/department/station and ask the desk clerk what is leagle and what is not.

Thanks guys,
that makes me feel a bit better. so far i have found the cops here in brooklyn to be alright, not hassleing people for silly stuff... or even some things that i think deserve.
i've grown past the youthful arrogance/argue with the cop thing. i don't act or look like an ass, just want to live my life feeling secure and with minimal hassle. unfortunately, the blade thing is sometimes a conflict. i generally keep it concealed when in the proximity, but often forget. i do too much requiring one handed access to a blade to keep it inaccessably buried deep in my pocket all the time. i'm o.k. with keeping them buried when in a regularly patrolled area, but i'm certainly going to make them easily accessible when there is a real need or threat (work or s.d.), and i would like to think that LEOs would understand that.

i walk away from fights, if i can (just did the other day... with my girl next to me, i'd rather risk a blow to my ego than the obvious alternatives)

i don't start trouble. sometimes i speed and forget about parking regulations, but i mostly obey the law.

i only want to live my life with some modicum of self respect and reliance.

i am a "good-guy", but its often a challenge to keep this self-title when other good-guys say otherwise.

oh yeah,
what about multi-tools, in sheath, on belt? less that 4" but not concealed according to NYC law...
i mean... i won't go anywhere without... except bed, bathroom, court
'n the first two, it's still near
