Just thinking the other day about the o-ring
seals on the caps of the one piece knives. What size are they that they use(Project I) and are they made of rubber or other more durable material? If they are rubber, has anybody noticed theirs becoming brittle or dry rotting?I was thinking of picking up a couple at a hardware store or something for spares.

I was wondering the same thing

White Castle; an acquired taste

I don't know what the size is, but they are not made of rubber. My guess is it's polyurethane. I've used some oil for lubrication on them and not noticed any signs of break down as it would with rubber. If you have problems with yours, you can always ask your local plumber/hardware store for a replacement.

I really recommend that you not use oil on the 'O' rings. Most gun oils tend to break them down faster. :( I recommend you go to your local dive shop (i.e. SCUBA shop) and purchase a small tub or tube of silicon grease. It's cheap and it really prolongs the life of the 'O' rings, even in salt water! :D Dive gear has a lot of 'O' ring seals in it and silicon grease is what 99% of divers (including me) use to preserve them. Getting a spare is good too, but for general maintenance silicon grease is the best! Hope this helps!!!

FNFALFAN, that's sound advise. Rubber and oil doesn’t go well together as a rule of thumb. The point I was trying to make is, that even though I put Ballistol www.ballistol.com on my knife, including the threads on the handle screw, I haven’t noticed any negative effects on the o-ring. As mentioned, if you have the choice, use silicone.

As a second thought, I wonder how CRK own fluorinated grease would affect rubber.

Thanks for all the informative replies.I would still love to see a post response from CRK with regards to exact size and material type,as asked above.Best Regards,Ralph

Just like the summer suns and the fall winds; they will be around. Be patient, Anne is probablt real busy.

Here you go right off the CRK website.
The hollow handle is closed with a butt cap made of 6061 aluminum which screws into the handle against a Neoprene "O" ring, ensuring the cavity is sealed from dust and moisture.

The O-rings are indeed neoprene and are available in any auto parts store. The neprene rings are actually oil impregnated and are used for everything from transmission seals to hydraulic fittings.

I thought of getting a spare ten years ago, but never got round to getting one. The original is still doing fine, through gun oil and a few other things as well. Shame you got me thinking about it now.

Thanks Neil and Al for the info.IF anybody happens to find out the two different sizes for the one pieces, please post it for reference. The O-ring looks like it sits in a grooved recess that is narrower than the thread part of the cap, that you would roll it over to get it on to the seat.So I just want to make sure I get that right size, without having to take the O-ring off for a comparison,"ya know what I mean Vern?" Thanks again,Ralph
