OC Spray mistake

Well, long story short, I (up until tonight) have been carrying one of those "palm defender" OC systems in my mag pocket on the left leg of my 5.11 tacticals, and tonight I guess the safety snagged against the other things I keep in there (Pen, tide to go pen) and it went off with a little bit of pressure, staining the pocket and leaving me nice and contaminated. ()

I've since done a hand wash of the pants and am planning to run it through a wash, as well as using some baby wipes to clean off the other items in the affected pocket as well as taking a long shower.

My question is this: Will what I've done be enough to get rid of the OC stain/residue so that my leg and whatever else comes into contact with that pocket doesn't start stinging uncomfortably for hours to come?

Should be enough to get rid of burining, not sure about the stain though, they may have add some type of dye to ID perps.

It's a good thing you had a Tide-To-Go pen with you to immediately treat the stain.

:)

Haha, yeah. The funky orange colour didn't exactly mesh well with the Khaki. As for a post situation report, my hands are still a bit tingly but otherwise I think I've managed to get rid of the stuff.

Totally going out on a limb here, but would it maybe help to use a household base to neutralize the acid in the OC? In other words by soaking in either bleach or ammonia (not both!:D) for a few minutes just in case?

a bud had a can of foam "blow" up from the heat in a closed car last summer, it blew the top off and luckily for him the foam shot mostly into a backpack vs going everywhere, when we 1st got into the car we were all going "WTF" with eyes buring and such but it really wasnt as big a deal as ya would think, he had to leave the windows down for a day/2 then it was fine, and wipe the seats down too, so if ya carry OC in a car ya might take it with ya in the summer, and this happened in april or may and it wasnt that hot, maybe 90 or so.

but anyway point being if ya wash the pants they will be fine imho.

That's never fun. I've carried the Key Defender version for two years now and haven't had that problem yet. I do worry about it though. I carry it connected to my key 'biner which keeps the safety towards the top of my pocket and generally out of trouble.

ha ha ha ha ha

You are a Texan! In New Jersey when it gets to be 90 or so, people start panicking and standing under the lawn sprinklers. :D

i used to complain about the heat in the summer in austin, gets up to 100 or 102 quite often with high humidity, then a bud whos an investor bought some property in laredo and hired me to help him manage it so i went down there 2 or 3 times a month for a few yrs and man austin seems cool after being down there a while lol, one day me and my wife were there it was 117 (with high humidity, at least as high as austin) and it got up to 119 the next day but we had already headed for home thank goodness, laredo is only ~ 200 miles from austin and ya wouldnt think that could make so much difference but man it does lol, it was "only" about 97 when we got home, it almost felt "cool" lol.

but i suppose ya get used to it, i know a bud who lives in palmer alaska but grew up down here comes to visit every yr or 2 and he about dies from the heat down here he just isnt used to it anymore, but it really isnt toooo bad lol if its not too much over 100 i wont complain too much, doesnt do any good to complain anyway i dont suppose, you guys up north are lucky, in the summer anyway.

I developed an allergy to Tear Gas a long time ago. Trace amounts have an effect on me.

Even long before that, I did slam the car door of my 67 Mushbang on a can of Mace as I was jumping in.

It had a real good effect.

I've always been somewhat curious about OC sprays. Perhaps it can be removed with a soaking in milk? Capsaicin removes burning when hot peppers are eaten.

It isn't an acid that is causing the burning.

It is capsaicin that is causing the burning, not vice versa.

when i worked a custody environment, we used oc on an almost daily basis.

on a couple occassions, milk was requested to alleviate the burning. more to shut them up than anything, we let one give it a try. as far as i could tell the milk had zero effect.

ive been exposed many times to oc and a couple to cs. the only real solution is time.

ive tried baby shampoo and other recommended "cures". cold water makes the burning subside so long as the water is constantly running. once it stops, the burning returns immediatly. and my allergy might be more severe than average, but over the next day or two i get residual burning from infected areas.

imho the more ya are exposed to it, and i guess know what to expect, the less "annoying" it is, i know i have been sprayed 4 or 5 times thru the yrs and the 1st was by far the worst, YMMV though of course,

for me, not so much.
