Odd issue/problem with my RJI

Hi all, I'm posting this in the Kershaw forum because I think it may be specific to Kershaw, since I've never heard of or seen this...issue anywhere. I picked up an RJI from Academy the other day, and man, what a fantastic knife for $30. I was really digging everything about it, especially for the price. I did notice that the deep carry clip made it a bit hard to draw from the pocket when its carried tip-down (cause there is nothing to grab above the pocket line, not a defect, a design choice) so I decided to switch the clip to my preferred tip-up carry. That's when I noticed that after I switched the clip, the deployment was way too tight, as in, the speedsafe wouldn't open the knife all the way. I backed off the pivot a bit, to the point where it still fired fast and had no play, and it was fine. Then I decided to switch it back to tip down, out of curiosity, and sure enough, now there was all kinds of side-to-side play until I adjusted the pivot. Weird, right? I've never heard of clip placement or tension affecting the pivot. Anyway, I don't want to come off too negative, I'm not concerned about it in the least, I just thought it was weird and wanted to hear if anyone else noticed this.

BTW, do yourself a favor and pick up the RJI. One hell of a knife bargain.

There are times when it occurs, to the best of makers. I had a few non Kai folders made by another amazing company, where adjusting the stop pin screw would loosen the blade/tighten the blade to the point I had to adjust it along with the pivot screw to get the action I wanted without any play.

Re: the clip [sorry I forget how its located on the RJ1 even after having 3 - don't have any atm] - is when the clip is shrouding/around the pivot, tightening the clip can press down on the pivot screw/scales, etc. etc. And this in turn can change some of the dynamics. Even at this price point, these knives these days are machined to such small measurements, that it doesn't sound off that extra tightening, which may cause micro meters of pressure/downward force would cause the knife to feel some sort of resistance - hence needing to adjust the pivot.

I have a folder [from none of the "above" makers] where the pocket clip screw pushes against the backspacer. I suppose the backspacer was supposed to be milled for the clip screw to go through.... but perhaps mine didn't, and this pushes up on the backspacer, so I opted to only use 2 screws lol. But to make an example of it, just that little bit of screw is enough to show space between the liners etc. And I suppose you can relate it easier as to how it may effect a pivot area.

Hope i didn't confuse you too much :p I feel like its in a real grey zone. But as long as your blade is working the way you want it, I hope it is ok with you.

I had this issue once with a kershaw scallion. When they sent me a new clip the screws they sent me were a little too long and made the speedsafe not function correctly. I swapped out to the old screws and it worked fine! Try loosening the clip screws not the pivot!
