Like many of the BF members here I have owned and gotten rid of a number of knives from a number of makers over the years. After collecting for a few years I have narrowed it down to a few knives that I know I will always own at least one of. With so much accumulated experience here it would be great to hear your short list of 10 (or less). If you have time to include some small details that make the difference for you that would be great as it would give some insight as to why you like what you like. It will be interesting to see just what comes up and if we share some common ground. Here are mine:

Emerson CQC-7 - A perfect work and utility knife, robust, easy to service, really ergonomic (although it doesn't look it) great in a variety of grips, prefer the "V" grind over the chisel, great clip. Nicely weighted and balanced, great in a variety of grips.

Small Sebenza inlay clip point - Flawless design, nice pocketable size, prefer the inlay as I like the look of it and it thickens up the handle, love the pocket clip, the hollow grind the jimping and how easy they are to service.

Small Sebenza Micarta or C/F inlay Insingo - all of the above plus the large cutting area of the Insingo blade making it perform like a larger knife than its physical size.

Strider SNG - Quite light for its size I think almost a perfect weight, very well balanced, excellent ergonomics, quality materials and easy to service, feels better in the hand in a variety of grip styles than almost any knife I own. Not too big, not too small.

Benchmade 940 - Extremely pocketable just disappears, axis lock makes it very fast to deploy and engages solidly, ergonomics are great, takes up very little pocket space for its size, don't like the stock clip I change them to a BM split arrow. Love the grind, the spine of the blade and the handle detail.

Hinderer XM18 3.5 flipper Gen 4 - Quality like a CRK in a package like a Strider, excellent ergonomics, great grip and very well balanced, stout and durable, great clip, little heavy (compared to the strider for example) Love the almost hydraulic way it flips, prefer the washers on this knife to a bearing system.

Spyderco Para 2 - So light for its size, so well made, such great ergonomics, skeletonized liners, a great slicer, incredible ergonomics and offered in all sorts of super steels.

Spyderco Dragonfly 2 H-1 - Great ergos and cutting performance for such a tiny knife, love the H-1 as it is worry free, a great knife for travel and all sorts of outdoor adventures. Light as feather you can take it anywhere, an amazing little knife.

Spyderco Native 5 - Great stout reasonably priced no nonsense knife. Exceptional version of a back lock, nice thick handle with know sharp corners. just the right weight.

SAK Evolution Grip S54, the yellow one, love it wouldn't change anything about it, has a locking blade impossible to beat for the $$$, like the colour easy to keep track of perfect for so many situations. Ideal travel companion.

Looking forward to hearing about your top picks.

I've only really been into good folders for about 6 years, before that it was just cheap pocket knives. But I'll offer up a few of my favorites at this time based on my limited experience. All subjective and subject to revision of course.

Para2: The ergonomics are just great, it's a tool that molds so securely into my hand with a sabre grip or choked up. Not too big, not too small, easily carried, the balance between hand filling for comfortable extended use and fitting easily in the right front pocket is right in the Goldilocks zone.
Available in great steels, with very intuitive and easy to use locking mechanism. A versatile folder and man does it cut.

Benchmade 943: Magnificent slim 3.5" Axis lock folder, disappears in the pocket, size/profile/cutting edge length ratio is an EDC ideal. Prefer the clip point to the 940, just wish it would some upgrading in materials like the 940 has. The Axis lock rocks.

ZT 0562: Ultra sturdy work knife, awesome in Elmax/G10, an industrial grade folder with great ergos. Some say its ball bearings are susceptible to dust and grit but I don't get into gritty enough things to have noticed that myself. Love this beasty knife.

It's taken me 15+ years to get to this point with my folders. I'm happy.

Cold Steel Talwar Full Ser.:
Bad intentions. Aus8, Great handle, scary blade, light for its size, f&f above its pay grade, solid lock.

Benchmade 710-1401:
Work, outdoors, utility. M390, Contoured scales, recurve makes for aggressive cutting, carries small for its size.

Spyderco Manix 2 LWTB:
Work, outdoors, utility. BD1, lightweight, good slicer. Becoming my favorite camp folder.

Spyderco Gayle Bradley:
Utility, dress, extended cutting chores. M4, cutting machine, built solid, great f&f, bank vault lock up. If I could only keep one folder, this would be it.

Benchmade 940-1:
Ultimate EDC IMO. S90v, beautiful cf scales, very light weight, wonderful action, holds an edge a long time.

Benchmade 940:
EDC, utility. S30v, lightweight, beautiful action.

Spyderco Rookie G10:
EDC. VG10, super thin, very lightweight, i've carried this knife more than any other in the group.

Benchmade 707:
EDC. 154cm, a lot of blade for handle size. Solid. Carry this one a lot.

Spyderco Chaparral:
Dress. CTS-XHP, great f&f, very lightweight.

Spyderco Techno:
EDC, man jewelry. CTS-XHP, impeccable f&f, lock up is incredible, this knife is just cool. My only ti-frame lock.

Mine would be, after all these years, trades and purchases...

Cold Steel Broken Skull.:
Most recent one. So thin, flat, lightweight and grippy, Great handle, strongest lock, sharp and long blade, great coating..., all points are above the price/quality you can get anywhere else IMO. It's here to stay, I'd bet.

Cold Steel Hold Out I:
Large camp knife, outdoors and EDC or possible SD, kitchen. If I could only own one XL folder, this is it. Love the neutral handle, excellent slicey grind and ultra versatile blade shape. Weighs only 7 oz. and construction/utility/design is hard to beat for most tasks. I'd use it as a last ditch tool, and it's an excellent meat/veggie cutter.

Spyderco Pacific Salt:
Work, outdoors, utility. H1, super lightweight and thin, fierce cutter. My favorite EDC folder. If I could only keep one folder, this would be it.

Spyderco Spyderhawk Salt:
Camp and garden, rainy days blade, extended and tough cutting chores. SE H1, uncomparable cutting machine, only 3oz, great hooking and material trapping action, very thin and flat.

Spyderco Tasman Salt:
Beach and pool/pajamas and swimsuit folder. Cuts way above its size, I use it for boxes, plastics and envelopes and weighs so little I carry it virtually every day on a pocket/coin pocket/jacket/wherever it fits, so unobtrusive.

Spyderco Aqua Salt:
Of all Fixed Blades, this is the one. Use it and carry it almost exclusively on rainy days, trips, camping/hiking and rely on it for most tasks, never failed me , it's sturdy, thin, excellent grip and awesome sheath. Not overly big or heavy but tough and a true chainsaw with those teeth and steel.

Wenger S52:
EDC Sak most days. All I need from time to time, nothing I don't. Rely on it for most non-cutting chores and around people or in-town use.

Gerber MP800:
EDC Multitool I carry the most. Nice OHO blade, sturdy construction, best pliers i've handled (ergos, shape and feel, replaceable wire cutters...) and those stubby but strong drivers + OHO scissors just make it a favorite of me¡ine and the king of my most carried Multitool collection.

LM Micra:
Keychain carry, nothing beats it for the size. What can I say that hasn't been said about it? So tool-dense and versatile it finds its role in my weekly activities almost without exception.

Hmm, good question,
I can name a few but don't think I'll get to ten, Lionsteel Kur, Paramilitary 2, Ti Military, Reate Torrent, Emerson CQC 15, ZT 0200, 0560, 0452, Recon 1,
These are it for now,

My new EDC is a Pro-Tech Godson auto. It is perfect for me, despite it being a bit larger than is legal in my state. Aside from that is a Gene Wiseman 3 7/8 in barlow. For now, these two are perfect users and I doubt I'll get anything else till I either break or lose them.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge everyone, lots of great input so far.

I think I can confidently name 5...

1. Benchmade 940 - To be honest, I bought it because everyone constantly talked about how great it was. When I finally had it in hand, I understood. S30V. Excellent edc, light weight, comfortable and SO fun to deploy. Probably the most perfect edc ever. That weird green and purple combo might deter some people, but if you're like me, the true appreciation for its uniqueness comes after using it. The 940 is the right edc for almost anyone. $180? Worth it.

2. Spyderco Manix 2 - AMAZING ergonomics. S30V. Love peel ply g10. Gimping in all the right places. Slices everything like butter. Perfect size. The leaf-shaped blade at its finest. $100... Seriously... $100...

3. ZT 0562 - The most fun I've ever had with a flipper. Elmax. Bearings. That slicer grind is nearly unmatched in performance. Super tough, excellent ergos. Built nearly the same as an XM 18 3.5 for half the price. IMO, far and away the highest quality knife under $250.

4. Hinderer XM 18 3.5 - The real deal. S35VN. Tough as a bombshelter door. It'll stand up to nearly anything. Godly ergos. A visual masterpiece from a minimalist's perspective. Pride of ownerhsip is a big one here. Theres something about having a real Hinderer in your pocket that's very fulfilling. You can depend on this knife... and you can literally feel it. $425!? Yup. Worth it.

5. Victorinox Cadet - Best budget edc knife EVER! No idea what steel it is. Damn decent stuff for less than $30! Great by itself, or coupled with a far more expensive "pocket jewelry" knife. You know... so you don't mess up the blade on your pricey beauties ;). Seriously, everyone should own one of these. I love it just as much, if not more than some of my more expensive knives simply because it sees so much use, and shows almost no wear at all. Awesome value.

You might read this list and think, "wow, that dude pretty much buys the most recognizable knife from each of the most well known brands in the knife world." - And you are very much correct. (Minus the Para 2). Why do you think there are so many Toyota Camrys on the road? Cause' their damn good cars! :)

I have a few:
1. Sebenza 21. I anodized mine and added a deep carry clip.

2. Spyderco titanium military. Something necessary about a military.

3. Hinderer xm-18 3.5 with 20CV. Enough said.

4. Benchmade 940-1 S90V. Light and solid.

5. Buck 301 with BG42. Because I love a stockman with super steel

I have four categories that I fill with favorites, and I have current favorites (that have been used/customized to the point that it wouldn't make sense to get rid of them).

Large Folder (Over 3.5") - CRK Sebenza 21. My favorite knife. I have a couple of daily users and one unique graphic in damascus that I use for my fancy carry. And sometimes camping or yardwork just to use something pretty.

Small Folder (Under 3") - CRK Sebenza or Inkosi. i have both, couldn't decide which is more useful to me.

Large Fixed (over 9") - Busse chopper. Right now it is a Double Talon Battle Mistress, but I have a BB13 coming that I expect to blow me away.

Small Fixed (under 5") - Bark River Bravo 1. I might trade it out for some future BRKT with a high convex grind someday but the Bravo 1 works as well as any knife I could ask for.

There are only 3 knives that have really left a lasting impression on me as far as I would keep them...

Strider SMF (CPM154)

I use my knives hard, and Striders like that.
I love the ergo's especially the perfection that is the finger choil.
Just an easy to live with do-it-all well knife.

Andy Fitz Angel Wing Flipper (CPM154)

Exceptional F&F and flipping action on washers.
A great EDC knife that just works.
Fun to play with when you're not cutting with it!

CRK 21 Insingo (S35VN of course!)

Because it is the best EDC do-it-all-well folder I have ever used at any price point.
Simple, fun, easy to clean, great ergo's, exceptional blade design. It just works, no issues.

After all the knives I've bought, sold and traded these are what I have. I moved away from midtechs and went back to more Benchmade.

Here is a photo of what I am down to now (other than one small Insingo that is missing from the photo) The top ten from my OP are in the group, as well as a couple of others I don`t carry much but can`t bare to part with. Not that my collection was every very large, but bit by bit I have reduced it by more than half of it what it once was and these are the ones that really shine for me.

Interesting idea for a thread. I started off with traditionals, than cheaper tacticals. Now I've finally got it narrowed down to a certain size and look that feels good in the pocket. My top 10 in rotation are as follows
ZT 801, 452 and 561
Benchmade 710 and Crooked River
Boker Kwaiken
CRKT Otanashi Noh Ken and Hissatsu
Kershaw Launch 6
Protech Godfather

Honorable mentions to:
CRKT Nirk Tighe and Lg Fossil
Brous Sniper and VR-71

I like to make sure that I have multiples of the knives that have proven themselves to me and my knife needs. Currently, these would be:

Electricians-this is both a sentimental and personal choice. I currently have over 3 dozen. I carry and use them to pay homage to my father, but I find it very utilitarian and up to all tasks.

LM Micra- currently own 3. I gotta say this little package has been one of the very best pocket companions I've had in my life. It was my sole EDC for a decade and now it remains a keychain staple.

SAK- have 5 different models currently. They don't get a lot of pocket time, but it doesn't matter. Must haves.

BM Mini Barrage-currently own 2. I love this knife. Been my regular EDC for the last 7 years. For me it's the perfect size. Handles all my needs, keeps and edge, strops up nicely. I added a silver bolstered, M390 version just because.

BM 940-sleek, stylish, and a performer. Only own one right now, but that's gonna change pretty soon.

GEC 15s-my eye candy. Dig em and I continue to add them to my collection.

Barlows-own 5 different mfgs. Love the style and size. There are about half a dozen traditional knife patterns that I absolutely love, and I love have them in quatity and variation

I kept a list like that. But I stopped updating it a long time ago.
Here is my collection as of 2013. It's much different now.

Fällkniven A1: If I think I might wanna start a fire this knife comes along in my pack(together with a handsaw) when hiking and camping. This one splits wood like no other knife and combined with a handsaw there really never is a reason to bring a heavy axe.

Small Sebenza 21: I don’t know what to say, it’s just the greatest pocketknife I know of. I havent bought a serious folder for 3 years thanx to the sebbie.

Victorinox Classic SD: Just a great supersmall slipjoint folder that i always carry in my coinpocket, it has saved the day several times. It has a knife(duh), scissor, small flat screwdriver, tweezers, file and a toothpick(I think this is the most used feature..)

Victorinox Secretary Alox: Great slipjoint knife with small and large blade, I like this one because it’s perfect for backpocket freefloat carry due to it’s sleek profile.

Bark River Ultra-Lite Bushcrafter: For belt EDC at our cabin this is the one. Superlight and a nice thin blade, yet sturdy.

Oh and as always with my “knifing”; SUBJECT TO CHANGE…

CRK Umnumzaan, my favorite CRK and a CRK is mandatory for a knife guy IMHO.
Emerson CQC-7BW, the original and consummate tactical folder - just so happens to excel at EDC chores.
Spyderco Slysz Bowie, one of the most amazing pocketknives I've ever had the pleasure of using - design brilliance and build/execution beyond reasonable expectation.
Emerson CQC-8 in all three sizes, because they all three are such perfect no nonsense designs and carry so well - especially true of the waveless 8.
Hinderer XM18 3.5 which is one of the most secure and amazing grips I've ever felt, and high quality + heavy duty in just the right proportions - I favor the bowie blade shape.
Emerson Commander in Super, standard and mini - just because I LOVE them - best grip ergo's there is.
Spyderco Gayle Bradley (original) which was at it's best in the initial, original form - uber-high performance, elegance, and downright fantastic gentlemanly heavy duty folder.
Emerson Roadhouse in Super and standard, just because I think they are bad@ass.
CRK Small 21 Micarta, for when I need svelte discretion.
Medford Viper, because I've never enjoyed a folding pocket knife more than this amazing piece of work.

Even after years, all of the below are still subject to change every hour on the hour. I really enjoy these lists because reading others gives me ideas, and it also makes me consider where I currently stand.

  • Slysz Bowie - Pocket knife perfection. If I could only have one knife... Its not big, its not small. It's a slicer, but kinda stout. Its classy, but also utilitarian. Its built like a tank, but finished like a piece of jewelry.
  • Gayle Bradley 1 - Maybe the ultimate cutting tool. Thick, heavy, HG M4, great ergos and not bad to look at either.
  • Manix 2 LW S110v - Not actually sure why I need another knife. This thing is a machine that punches way above its weight and price.
  • PM2 - The CF M4 is my favorite. Of all the things that make this knife so popular, its all about the actual blade for me... perfect for nearly everything.
  • 484-1 - I just love this knife. Tons of cutting edge for the size, fits tight in my hand but in a good way. Great office EDC. Basically kicked Mini Grips out of my life. If it had an opener hole like the 555 instead of those silly studs I needed to grind down it would be perfect.
  • ZT 0562cf - My favorite ZT. Carries slim and easy but packs a beast of a blade. Ergos are perfect for me, and few handles are as comfortable. ZT has a lot of perfect blades, but this one is the most useful IMO.
  • Dragonfly 2 - Is there a better knife this size? I stash these all over my life.
  • Chaparral CF - Dressy knife that is very capable. A Sage would be on this list if the Chaparral wasn't so perfect.
  • Benchmade Valet - The sample I have is perfect, and despite its cramped handle, it works very well for me and is a very practical carry.
  • Victorinox SD Classic - Impossibly small, deceivingly useful. Those scissors alone...

Lots more I'd like to put on this list, but here's ten and I'm trying to do a sell off, so I'll think of this as my base.

Same here, it has me reviewing a lot of knives I hadn't really considered before, I don't know if that is necessarily a good thing :-) I like the mini long term review sort of side to this, as opposed to the unboxing video approach. Hard to beat the real world experience of actual knife users. I myself have bought, sold and then come back to a number of knives to get to where I am now. As time goes on and I start to realize what I do and don't like I have started to do that far less, and that is a good thing.
