Oh, Snap

This question is probably more of an opinion, but I was wondering. For those who use sheaths that have a strip of leather with a snap to hold the knife in, where do you like the snap to be positioned? My uncles all seem to think that the snap should be either along the front or back of the knife, and never on the side. But, I've seen so many with the snap on the side that I have to wonder.

On the side? I'm not sure what you mean?

Heres an around the handle:

And an over the guard:

either of these what you mean?

The first picturie shows the snap on the side. What I was asking is if that is the prefered positioning, or if people prefer it to be on either the front or back of the knife, like in this picture.

Ah! Now I see! :)

I've seen them both on the front and on the side, but never seen one on the back. Seems like that would make it hard to unsnap and re snap.

The way I make my around the handle straps the snap can be on the side or front.

Looks like the snap on the side makes for a good fast thumb flick to open....but I prefer it on the front too.

My biggest concern is that the flap goes in the proper (to me) direction. I believe that the strap should be pointing to the rear so that if you are walking in dense cover the flap doesn't get caught on a branch and opened. This is way you see in Rayban's sheath and the top sheath made by Leatherman. Opposit of the way in Leatherman's 'over the guard' sheath. I don't know how the hell I'd go about doing that one my way! LOL! I've never used that particular design. Looks pretty, though. Just doesn't look secure to my eyes.

I've actually had quite a few people turn the around the handle strap so it faces forward. I don't know the reason, I need to ask though.

The over the guard strap is quite secure, also the most common strapping method for sheaths. Now if the knife has a double guard or a large enough protrusion on the spine I much prefer to run the strap over the spine. The straps I made will swivel out of the way so cutting is not a real concern.

I prefer it the way Rayban showed. That way it is less likely to catch on branches and the like when moving about. It also just seems like a more natural motion to open/close it that way when on the belt.

Yes, I've made them with the strap over the guard on the spine several times, and pointing back, but when going over the front guard, my straps always point straight down. I've been afraid to give them any forward tilt.
