Does anyone other than me remember those Buck ads which showed a Buck fixed blade being hammered through a large bolt? This was in the late '50's and '60's. Does anyone remember what type of steel was used in those Buck knives? Thanks for your help, Walt

Walt, as I recall reading somewhere all buck knives were made out of files back in those days. Which would probably mean they were either W1 or W2.

Sincerely,
Adam

Adam...
Those adverts (which went into the 80's) claimed all Buck blades were that strong, including the stainless. I think Walt is referring to the identity of the stainless, which isn't commonly identified.

Walt,

These excerpts are taken from the company history on Buck's home page:

"Buck's knives were all created from used metal files that had been discarded by Consolidated Vultee, the huge aircraft manufacturing plant that later became Convair. These worn-out files, with
their heavy carbon content, were perfect for the toughness and edge-holding qualities that Buck required in his knives."

"Until 1961, the Bucks converted secondhand metal files into knife blades. Most of these files came from Consolidated Vultee. The independent waste hauler hired by Consolidated would separate the files from the remainder of his load and sell them to Buck for a penny apiece. "They were so cheap, we always took as many as he could bring us," Al said. "We used to stack up those files like cordwood."

The handles were carved from lignum vitae and rosewood scraps, collected from the Sullivan
Hardwood Co.

The sheaths were made from scraps collected from the McPherson Leathergoods Co."

Currently they use 425M which is a modified 420 stainless.

Hope this helps.
