My dad in law gave me an old camp knife to sharpen. It has the OLD fashion can opener just for fun I asked if he used it ever, he said yes in Korea (he was drafted) in '56 stood gate duty for a year. I tried it, & got it going good, so why did we switch to the beak shape? This 1 works better.

Why the switch? Is it possible that the new style is a bit more compact or maybe more user friendly even if it is not as effective? As an aside. This style knife, whether you call it a camp knife, a scout knife, a SAK Soldier, whatever, is among my favorites. Although not correct, it is this style I think of when someone says "jack knife". Great knife. Hang onto it if you can.

Probably my favorite pattern as well. I carry a Wenger SI, sometimes a Vic Cadet, but I love the pattern. So many uses for it's tools. A very versatile knife.

I belive the cans of old were a lot tougher than the modern ones. I have an old British clasp knife with a thick can opener that looks like it could pry open a car door let alone open a can. I have never tried it out but I think it would leave a ragged edge on the can.

I have an old Imperial Kamp King and it feels tougher than my new Leatherman/Gerber Multi Tool can opener. They just made things differntly in the good ole days, I guess.

Back the EVERYTHING was well built.

That was my first pocket knife, bought at age 12 from paper route money. It was my only for 15 years, carried just about every day, until I gave it to a girl friend, who promptly lost it.

Decades later (I'm an oldie), a friend found one just like it in excellent condition and gave it to me. Right now, by sheer coincidence only because I usually carry one or another Leatherman these days, it is hanging by dummy cord into my right front pocket. I've been toting the KK lately, curious to see if it's still a viable EDC.

Well, it brings back fond memories, still entirely useable, but you really can't go back to a place that's long gone. :(
