Old Survival Camp Revisited, 15 years since making fire this way

Hi all,

Some of you may remember last Febuary, I posted some pics about making a survival camp I made. What I did that day was I left home and went for a hike. Here is the twist I acted as if I had gotten turned around or what ever you want to call it. I was lost. With just the cloths on my back and my shoulder bag that I keep my survival kit/ woods roaming kit. Well I acted like I was lost and decided to make a survival camp to spend the night as if I really had to. If you have not every done one of these. Take the time and make one up and stay the night in it. The more you do this the easyer and better you will get at it. Well I made a leanto that day and used my AMK heet sheet for the shelter I gathered wood for my fire the normal stuff you would do if you were going to make a camp for the night if you had too.
Here are some pics of it.

This is the pic of it all set up.

Here is a pic that I took about 3:30 am.

I used my coat as a blanket and for my insulation I gathered up enough dried grass that gave me a good several inches of insulation form the cold ground. With my fire and all I was pretty comfy through the night.

After I did that AMK heet sheet Survival camp, I decided that having a AMK heet sheet is better than nothing, BUT LOL I decided to start carrying a real shelter. Like my military poncho, along with the AMK HEET sheet. If it had been raining or snowing I would have made a different shelter. A open leanto with that type of little shelter sucks when it is raining or snowing.

OK fast forward a few months and I went back to that area to help my nephew when he was repairing some fence. I decided to go and see if that heet sheet was still up. It was but it had a few holes in it.

Fast forward again a few months. Today I am kathy went to that old campsite and when we got there this is what it looked like.

It was down and out for the count LOL.

kathy and I wanted to have a fire, a weenie roast and heat up some water for coco and just spend the day relaxing enjoying the outdoors.

I started to split some kindling up with my One Zero knife for are soon to be fire.

IMG_0175.jpg

It has rained a some hear lately and everything was damp. So I spilt some wood up and then made some fuzz sticks.

IMG_0176.jpg

When I do my fire lays I will put down 2 peaces parallel with a 4" or 5" gap between them and they are about a 2 thick or so. Then I will put on 3 or 4 cross peaces like in this pic.

IMG_0177.jpg

Then I will put my fuzz sticks on the cross peaces.

IMG_0178.jpg

Then I will put my small split kindling around and tepee style against the fuzz sticks like in this pic.

IMG_0179.jpg

Now here is where I did things and do things differently, I normally use cotton and pj mix to light my fires , but I will wrap some cotton and pj mix around a stick and make a longer type match.

I carry in my pocket and severel other places containers that hold the cotton and pj mix with a firesteel rod in there too. But today I decided to use a different firestarter tinder to light the fuzz sticks and then the rest of my wood on fire.

Last night I was looking through one of my survival books and came across the many ways to start a fire. Out of the many ways that you can start a fire one of them is with Steel wool. If you have never tried this get some and try it out it really is a cool way to get a fire going.

Well I have not started a fire with steel wool in about 15 years. Why I do not know I just have not LOL.

Just like with the wrapping some cotton around one of the spilt sticks I split up when I started to split wood up in the beginning for the fire i was going to have. With triple 000 steel wool if you tease it up and then lightly wrap some around a stick

IMG_0180.jpg

and then then set the stick down and grab your firesteel and strike it so that the sparks will land on the firesteel Now once you see that it is lit grab that stick and start blowing on it and it will start to glow red hot

To be continued,

Bryan

Hi all.

Now once you get this red hot glowing steel wool you want to get it to your fuzz sticks right away and keep blowing not real hard but trying to keep a steady flow of air on the steel wool.

Once you get to that point it really works pretty good for getting a fire started like in this pic.

Just a few more pics of my fire growing.

Once the fire was going and we had some coals going

I went and cut a couple of sticks for us and kathy and I carved up are sticks. she used her pathfinder knife and I use my One Zero.

Then the pay off roasting weenies LOL

IMG_0187.jpg

Then I split up so more wood the dark brown is Walnut and the yellow wood is mulberry for the next time I head to that campsite.

I hope you all can get out and do some fire making and weenie roasting this weekend.

Take care all,

Bryan

I plan on it for sure, I had to go fix some fence and move a couple horses this morning so I am down to Sunday and Monday now. That is if the wife is going along.

Very cool Bryan. Steel wool isn't too often talked about, but it is great stuff. I think of it as enhanced tinder fungus :D

Ok, the front horse, Appaloosa?
And what is the car in the background?

Hi all,

RR thanks. It was a neat time out today. Yea I agree with ya If a maker is not getting out and using there own stuff then how do they really know it going to work and feel good to use it. I just love this design. I wish I had thought of it LOL but am so thankful to Mistwalker for allowing me the opertunity to make it for him and then when I did make his up I knew I was going to make me one to. Yea is is some what of a biggin LOL.

Jim, good deal I hope you get out to. by the way Cool looking horeses. That is one animal we do not have any more here on the farm. I wish we did though.

Ken, thanks. Yea I do not use it as much as i used to but that is going to change I had a great time with starting our fire today. Steel wool is a hot fire to begin with and you have to have your fire lay ready ot it goes out to fast.

I like the thought of the enhanced tinger fungus LOL that is a good one LOL.

Foilist thanks, Yep no more burnt fingers for me LOL and I can put that match on one side of the fire or on the other side with ease LOL.
Like in this pic you can see that I already started the fire on the left and then moved my hand/arm over to the right side

I hope you like it to, it works great.

Very cool, indeed. I always think about starting a fire when I use steel wool to clean off rust, but when it times come for the fire I never think of it.

Thanks for the pics

Awesome stuff, ya, haven't used steel wool in a while, should try that again.

FYI..... in a pinch you can use a 9 volt battery to start the steel wool burning. Works great, just touch the two contact points to the wool and it will ignite.

Jason

One of the instructors at Dirttime has occasionally been able to start 0000 steel wool with a really fresh 1.5V AA battery. But he said that you usually need a 3V 123A for a reliable start (which he demonstrated).

Hi all,

the game LOL yea I do not think about it mush either but I was looking through one my survival books and saw that again LOL and went out to the shop and got it and put it in my pack right then and there so I would not for get it LOL maybe you better do the same LOL.

Thanks coaldigger, I hope you get out too this weekend it really charges my batteries so to speak LOL.

Fonly thanks, yea steel wool is pretty cool stuff I am going to carry some from now on and not wait 15 years before lighting a fire with it LOL

JJ you are so correct a 9 volt is freaking cool in starting some steel wood:thumbup:.

DWK2 I again good stuff there using batteries will work too. I never tried to with AA . I might have to for my next fire LOL

Take care all and I hope you all get to get out in the woods this weekend.

Bryan

The Dirttime instructor said it's really tricky with a single AA and you have to have a really fresh, hot one. Kind of hit or miss. However, he instantly started 0000 steel wool with a cell phone battery or a 123A battery. Two AA's in series would presumably work just as well.

DancesWithKnives

I've started fires with cell phone batterie's, 9 volt, AA, C and D's no problem and they weren't fresh. I haven't tried it with AAA and I'm not sure why but will have to this week. Just stretch out the steel wool, stack 2 batteries (for AA, C, and D) and touch the steel wool to the bottom and the top of the stacked batteries and presto! you have fire.

Right. If you have two AAs, they wouldn't need to be fresh. I would think that two AAAs would work but it would be fun to see whether a single AAA battery would ignite 0000.

Great post Bryan. I have not messed around with steel wool since I was a kid. When we did, it was with the flashlight batteries :D So yes, two AA in series lights it up just fine :D Just been a whole lotta years :D
