Omega Automatic?

Any idea if this watch is any good?

I was just cleaning my top floor, and found an old Omega automatic! It has a grey, almost oyster-y face with brass looking hands and numbers (well, 3,6,9,12, then points for the rest of the numbers...)
I shook it up and it works, though it's only been keeping time for half an hour so far.

Any insight much appreciated!

Nah, old Omegas are junk -- but don't just throw it out, because some of them have radium paint on the dial, and that stuff is too dangerous to have in a landfill. Send it to me, and I'll dispose of it properly. I'll even pay the postage, just to help you out. ;)

More seriously, Omega made a lot of different models over the years, and a lot depends on condition, but it's definitely not junk. Can you post a scan? Try posting on the Vintage forum at http://www.timezone.com/ too.

Thanks Cougar. I've been nosing around the Omega forum at Timezone for a little while today. I think it may be a "bumper" auto, as there is definitely something bumping around inside when it gets moved. My Dad gave it to me at least 25 years ago (and it was far from new then), and it got lost/forgotten about.

It's running a little (ok, a lot)fast - it's picked up an extra 18 minutes over the last 5 hours, so I assume it needs a little attention. I really like it, it looks very simple and classy (to a G-Shock/Ironman guy like myself)

I'm not authorized to post any pics, but would gladly send a pic to anyone that could post it for me.

And thanks for the disposal offer, very kind!

You can get the watch refurbished to new condition by sending it to omega through an authorized dealer; I am sure you can get a clean and lube for about $100, and get it adjusted to keep good time for a lot less then that. Other then that, vintage omegas are great collectibles and great gadgets to have!

Check out the
Gisbert Joseph site.
Do a search on Omega and you might find a close match.
At least it might give you an idea of what the watch is worth.

Thanks Hogman and Lenny. The closest I can find so far is a 1951 Seamaster. The numbers and hour indicators are about the same. Different face colour, same (now very faded) 2 tone, lighter inside the seconds markers.

Wow, those vintage Seamasters, Speedmasters, and Constellations are beautiful! Great, just what I needed - something else cool to lust after.

BJ70-guy: As the others here have alreay mentioned, vintage Omega's are great watches!
I highly recommend you get it refurbished. Given the likenes of a 50's Seamaster, it's very likely that the "bumping" you hear is one of Omega's "bumper" automatic movements.
That's an automatic movement where the rotor (winding the watch) doesn't rotate all the way but bumps against stops in the movement plate.
Some of them are very sought after and collectible!
Oh yeah...another potential addiction, I know, I know!:D

look for the Omega Forum and try the question there, or get in contact with Bill Sohne, the Omega Forum moderator. He's one of the most respected men in the world of Vintage Omega watches. So much so that there are times that the Omega factory will look to him for historical insight.

saying just a knife - send me some photos of front and back and movement and I will tell you what you have and approximate worth.
If you do not know how to open the back do not
take it to someone who does or you will g0uge it out

Agagin I would like to thank you all for your input. I got a good recommendation for a watchmaker off of TZ, I'm going to take it in early this week, should be able to shed some light on the subject.

Westcoasttime, thank you for your kind offer. I'll send you a couple of pics tomorrow, and get one of the movement when I take it in to the shop.

Whatever this watch is, I really dig it! Knives, flashlights, now watches...I need a better job!

of WestCoastTime enjoys one of the best reputations on both Broadarrow.net as well as Timezone.com.

I don't frequent any other watch boards but I suspect his reputation on other boards would be sterling as well.

His assessment of your watch should be accurate and honest.

I bought a a knife for daily use from someone on Blade Forums last year and got a great knife,
a great deal and a very nice transaction.
Since then I have been lurking and watching since I had to sell my
knife collection over the past few years to help pay for one of my
daughter's college tuition - money well spent. A friend and fellow forum member urged me to put
my two cents in because it might be helpful about watches when the items came up since it might help
the forum - I finally said yes and enjoy this forum very much logging on every day - it is truly one of the friendliest and most helpful
forums to members on the net. Thanks for letting me aboard.
