On of the highlights of the year for me. A 4.5 year project.

We have seen this before, but now we have some information from the makers.

I had to resize a few of the photos (forgive me for some of the distortion.)

Some of Vans words:

As for the concept of the Short sword I will try to explain it like I did in the beginning with Buster before he passed away. After I explained it a bit he got the Idea of what I was trying to do and thought it was very cool and definitely unique. ( That gives an idea of how long this major 4 1/2 year project took.!!)

I think the piece went over great because everyone thought it was a Scepter lol, and that was part of the illusion.

I have so many design ideas stuck in my head that I finally got to do one of the puzzler pieces.

The idea behind this entire series of knives is " Illusion", to be able to create an art knife that can stand on it's own when told that is one thing but can also be something entirely different if told that is what it is, hence the "Scepter" or the gold dagger named "Golden Heart" because of the solid gold heart of the knife that is hidden inside.

I guess what makes it hard to understand for some, is first not having seen it in both views and under both names, when seen that way you can visualize the illusion and the short sword or large dagger ( I prefer large dagger) at the same time.

If you saw the name for it as the "Scepter" that is what you will see at first, but if one was told it was a "large dagger" that is what they would see, and it's hard to grasp because it's never been done before. It is a knife that is also a total piece of art depending on how you look at it.

This is a total new concept on an art knife so it is hard for people to see two things at once that are totally two different things, not just a knife that is carved to look like something but is still very much a knife, but to be able to be seen as one or the other alone, albeit at the same time.

That's where the illusion comes in - to have made something in such a way that you can see both things.

But depending on the description you are given at the onset decides how the mind defines it. Strange but true! And that ( to me ) is the true art of it.
That is how this piece was designed to be seen, so as to try to enter a entire different area of knife appreciation, so to speak, like those who don't care much for knives but love elaborate art that's where this comes in because you get both worlds. So it can be the golden art piece that could be taken for an artistic interpretation of part of the crown jewels with the acoutraments when sheathed, or it can be a beautiful large solid gold dagger covered in gems with an obsidian stand, because the guard fits so close to the sheath tube that it looks like one piece when sheathed and one would have no idea that there was a 19 inch solid gold blade inside.

So look at it in the sheath and have it called a "Scepter" to you and that is all you will see, but take it out of the sheath and have someone say look at this "gold dagger" and sheath and that is all you will see even when you put it back in it's sheath. That is the illusion.

Here is the correct description. Some of the numbers in the book are wrong:
"Golden Heart"
It is 27 inches overall, and is made completely of solid 14kt, 22kt, 24kt yellow gold and oxidized sterling silver, and fine silver, there is no steel anywhere in this piece.
There is 4.175 pounds of solid 14ky yellow gold, and 3.62 pounds of sterling silver.
There are 1000+ diamonds at over 25 carats, and over 80 carats of natural brilliant cut rubies, and cabachons - some of the large ones being what some term " Pigeon Blood" rubies, in other words super high color and quality.
Everything that is a black in color is textured and oxidized sterling silver.
The 14kt spring gold blade is 19 inches long, hand hollow ground with diamonds and rubies part way down the center. It measures 1 1/16th" wide x just under 1/4 inch thick ( can't remember the exact millimeter )
The guard and wings are of solid 14k yellow gold they are not hollow.

I believe I've seen that somewhere before and it wasn't in a pic. :D Isn't that the one he had on display at Blade Show ?

Yup. There is only one of 'em. ;).

(and no, it is not mine ... way out of my league.) :) A lot of us will be reading more about this effort in months to come. ;).

Good.....if that was yours, i was going to hunt you down and beat you senseless with a moldy leg of mutton, you undeserving goat lover, you:D Amazing piece. I shudder to think what the material cost of that thing was......like maybe equal to the annual GDP of some smaller third world countries?

LOL, maybe if I traded all of my collection and tossed in a goat or three along with my Buick. :D.

It is just great to have two friends back from a long and stressful journey. After hearing about all the time and trial and error the knife went way to cheap. (and that is the truth).

As far as I know this is the most expensive commissioned knife to date. Please correct me if I am wrong on that little piece of history.
(does not include knives that have been resold.)

Here is a pic of Van in his gold dust reclamation suite. ;)

I'll take it! Sorry, just got carried away!
THAT IS SOME KNIFE...THANKS FOR SHARING THE PHOTOS!

Not my cup of tea, but I bow to the drive and efforts that went into this piece.

What was your involvement exactly?

I know it's not yours Gus but a goat herder really needs one of those to keep the goats in line ;):D

A Work of Art for sure!

I hate grinding, filing and sawing gold. Hard to catch it all.

I believe I've seen that somewhere before and it wasn't in a pic. :D Isn't that the one he had on display at Blade Show ?

I think so.

I distinctly remember staring at it bug-eyed for about 15 minutes.

I didn't realize it was mostly solid gold and silver.

That knife is beyond belief. The makers are on a higher plane which I doubt that I will ever reach. It is definately at the top. I quit.

AMAZING!:thumbup:Wow! Now that is something else man.

My involvement? Van and Dellana are friends (knives aside) and I got to hold the puppy. :D.

Why exactly do you ask?

Wow!! now that is one incredible piece. Right up there with the King Tut Dagger which is an amazing knife. Everything just fits and the sceptre knife concept is great. Glad you posted those photos Gus. Most enjoyable.

I disagree Mr. Bump. I'm sure most everyone (brownshoe is around, afterall) else does as well. And, unless I remember wrong, your Brutus Axe is in the possession of the same collector as the Scepter that Bastid posted. Obviously the gentleman can buy nearly anything he wants and ony settles for the best! :)
