One knife or 2?

Here is the choice. I can get a BM 550 and an Endura, or a BM 806. I got rid of most of my knives to get the 806, but quantity over quality has some merit as well. I have a red/black Ares at BM getting a satin finish blade. However, a 4" folder is what I really wanted. The 710 has been DQ'd because of the recurve. I had one, but got rid of it because of that. Ok, so what would be the choice. Also, if a knife is out of stock at New Graham, can I order and get one sent when they come in, or do I have to wait to order?

I ordered an 806D2 from New Graham. I received an email message from Mary Beth stating that it was temporarily out of stock and they couldn't predict when new stock would arrive. I was given options of waiting or cancelling the order. No hassle. I cancelled.

Spoon River Cutlery has the 806D2 in stock for just a few dollars more.

It's a lot cheaper to get one knife that you really want than it is to buy lesser knives for the sake of having more.

I have gravitated towards quality over the course of the last few years. Therefore, I believe that it is better to have a few superior knives than it is to have a bunch of marginal or even good knives.

If you want a GOOD folder with a 4 inch blade (3.90"), get another BM 710, and don't sweat the slightly recurve blade...Recurves aren't all THAT hard to sharpen, (if that is your concern against recurve blades).

Glockman's right.
My 710HS is 50/50 plain edge/serrated.
The blade is plenty long enough to use the plain edge effectively & the serrated fills up the recurve. Serrations are also plenty long enough for serious work.
The Spyderco Sharpmaker makes short work of the serrations & works well on the plain edge too.
I'm not the biggest fan of combo edges & did'nt order the knife that way. It was sent by mistake, but after getting it & using it, I'm sold on the versitality of a decent length 50/50 blade.
M2 steel is the icing on the cake :D

Get one good knife now that you can really enjoy, and don't worry about quantity. You'll buy another good knife some day and then you'll have quality and quantity.

Don't wake up some morning to realize you spent enough on knives this year to buy a really expensive custom and all you have are beaters.

Good to hear. You all agree with me about one instead of 2. I have tried to like combo edges. Im still not sold on fully serrated ones. I carried a fully serrated delica for about 2 months, but I guess Im just not used to using a serrated edge. It took more effort in cutting than a plain edge for the things I use a knife to cut. I have also had 3 recurve blades, but sold them all. One was a 710, an Impulse, and a CRKT Falcon. The falcon was awesome, but the recurve mystified me. I think I could handle it now, since my sharpening techniques are more varied. I may get a small falcon to test this, but for now my primary knives are going to be plain edge, without recurve. The Ares and the AFCK are the only Axis locks with full metal liners that fit the bill and have blades over 3". If there are others, please advise. For fine cutting I have the blade of my Gerber Multitool and/or my Old Timer that I convex ground using Cliff Stamps slack belt on a doorknob technique.

BTW, the Ares is from you Esav. Its still kicking, but look around and see some of the crap I have put it through.

I'll let you know on Tuesday after I recieve my 806d2, then I'll have all 3 off the knives you're asking about:D

I happen to hold the Delica (and surely Endura as well) along with my 550 in very high regard, but I have no experience with the other.

I own a 551 D2 Griptilian and really like it. That being said... I would advise you to get the 806. Since you've saved and traded away other stuff for it, that's evidently the knife you are really wanting. Therefore, I think you'll be more satisfied with that purchase. Plus, the other knives (Endura, 550) are relatively common and, therefore, can be found on the internet for cheapish prices, should you have some extra money in the future and still be wanting one. There's my $0.02. Enjoy whatever you get! :)

I know this wasn't the main thrust of your post, but are you saying that Benchmade is refinishing a knife blade for you??? I didn't know they would do that!!! Would you mind dropping me an email and letting me know the specifics?

Please advise!!!

Thanks,

-John
