Sometimes you just use what you have.
Found this in my archive and it took me back for a bit in my mind to a more laid back time. It was nice. I thought I'd bring it back to the top. Any of you other makers have any stories like this where you pulled out something that was otherwise trash scrap and recycled it into something usable and cool?
This was in my neighbors scrap pile in the front yard to be picked up by the trash. He was throwing out a wheel barrel and my wife wanted it for planting flowers. It was a perfectly good wheel barrel that just needed some TLC but this was there too. It was a well used up side walk edger blade. Now its my mom's purse knife.
Little work, some cutting with a low heat thin kerf disc, and some left over scrap of elk antler and you have both a couple scales and a makeshift sheath. After drilling out the middle I lined the inside of the antler sheath with a polymer dental impression material that sucks the blade down so it holds tight. All I had to do was fill the insides with it and plunge the blade down in it and let it set up. Once done I capped the top and bottom of it with some scrap brass and threaded the enamel. Worked out pretty good in the end.
Anyway, not that I was expecting this thread to catch fire or anything but if there are any other leaf spring knives or other such things feel free to post em here for our viewing pleasure.
